Technically free, although there is a donations box for those keeping the toilets clean.
For a free spot it's pretty great. Excellent clean flush toilets. Cold outdoor shower and cold water faucet available for personal hygiene. Plenty of space. Only downside is the mayflies but they ain't so bad.

15 NZD/night for unpowered in winter season really gets you a lot here.
Tons of space, easy 10/10 kitchen facilities, clean toilets, hot showers are 1 or 2 NZD for 5 minutes, washing machine available for 4 NZD, no dryer i could se but they got racks for hanging your clothes.
You can pay for your stay with either cash or card (eftpos) in the kitchen when you arrive. The hosts are very nice.

The town itself is wonderful and I was about ready to move there.
Akaroa easy 10/10. The self contained spots are bare minimum though. Just parking spots with no facilities, and a fair amount of traffic at night.

Excellent little spot to stop for a night.
Down to a rocky beach, so you wake up with sounds of waves and birds. Public free toilets close by, but no trash bins or potable water

Pretty nice little free spot.
Flushing toilets are clean, and a cold faucet and kitchen table are available outside. If you're staying for a while or plan on staying you can also call city council for access to a legit kitchen with stove and hot water. Don't know the cost of this.
When I stayed some dog trainers came in the morning but they weren't annoying and my mate loved the dogs.
