Just a drive through review from midwinter, so take it with a grain of salt.
Toilets were dated and dark in the evening. Few spots but easy parking though. We ended up moving down the road to another spot and it worked out much better.

We were first timers w camper and this was our first stop after arriving in Auckland.
It was not too far to drive from the airport, quiet and tidy, had some activities for the kids but mostly peaceful in a country like area. Really nice showers and bathrooms! Very friendly staff!! Felt very safe! If you are stopping here after AKL make sure to pick up food and provisions before you get here there's reeeeally not much in the store. My kid got nervous about the amoeba warning on the mineral pools (which is pretty much on every mineral/thermal pool we saw in NZ) so we did only dipped our feet but it looked very nice. Would definitely recommend to everyone!

Good location but not super scenic - it's in the town car park, however definitely very very walkable and convenient to the main drag in town, a clean public toilet (but not open 24 hours), can walk to
the overlook, really like the takeaway place directly across the street very kind and big tasty menu. Campers definitely get checked in the morning by the council. We went in winter and it was half full so probably gets really busy in the summer! Would stay again!

Wow so cute so many amenities and so clean, served such a wide range of budgets from car campers to powered sites to self-contained apartments with pride and diligence.
The staff are super helpful. We are beginners and stayed in midwinter, so we really appreciated the lovely communal facilities and kitchen, hot showers etc. Very easy walk to the hot water beach spot and they rent shovels. They had a deal pay for 2 stay 3. It was awesome we loved this place.

Stayed in winter, arrived early so we got a spot (two spots) Verry easy beautiful white sand beach access, there was only one toilet in the block open but we understand cause it was winter.
It was extremely clean. There was a sink (but no dish washing allowed) . Outdoor beach cold shower by the toilets. The play ground was immaculate & picturesque with new equipment, lots of benches for beach watching/picnicking. There was a free hot cooker surface in the park under shelter. We were really happy to stay in this place it set the bar for cleanliness and services. Lots of local residents/some surfers walk through here even in the winter but they did not give us a hard time. Nice place to catch a sunrise as well it faces right onto the sand. We are just beginners but this was the best freedom spot we stayed at during out trip and we appreciate the community that approved this and sharing their little piece of beautiful NZ, even if it's just two spots, we appreciate it and do not take it forgranted.

This review is for one night midwinter just stayed from dusk to pre-drawn.
Appreciated the dumpstation and the two well lit toilets (although on the night we stayed they were in rough shape ;) Even in midwinter there were two other campers staying so it felt overall safe although early morning someone did drive by and shout something at us (this was the only time this happened in our week freedom camping). Lots of camper spots here. We could hear that the beach was really close although could not see it as it was very rainy and dark the night we stayed and we left right before dawn.
