Freedom camping is shit in Rotorua!
Be early for this one, yesterday at 3 there was no space left. Today I got the last one at 12.30, even tho camping is only allowed from 2pm… there is another freedom camping ground at the opposite of the lake with heaps of spaces and toilets, but it‘s only on campermate!

Nice spot!
Close to the road, but not really noisy. Lots of lots to choose from, clean toilets that stay open at night. Rubbish bin and drinking water tab with hose and dumping station. Beautiful beach just over the dunes.. would stay again!

was the only one camping there, yet felt safe since there are houses around.. clean toilets 3 min walk away

You can park on the grass, but the sign says only two are allowed to camp there.
Quite at night, decent spot, except it does not have toilets… probably a 4-5 min walk

One of my favorite spots I‘ve been to!
4 lots to choose from after 5pm. Very quite at night, feels safe. Toilets 1 min walk away (24h, flush toilet, light, paper towels??) everyone who mostly freedom camps onows how luxurious that is! 😂 water fountain and tap to refill bottles at the playground near the water!

A little field in the woods, rubbish bins, drop toilets, showers are closed at the moment.
No service at this location. I was the only person there too. Very dark and quit. Beware that this is very far outside and if something happens in the middle of the night, it will take time until someone passes by to help (and yes I do speak from experience) therefore I do not recommend for solo travelers. As a woman I was extremely lucky that the person stopping by had good intentions! Stay safe y’all!!

Loved the stay there!
Lots of spaces (only on weekends tho!) very quite behind the building. Nice toilets with music and stayed open at night, but weren‘t supposed to.. drinking water from a tap and dump station. Also a bit of grass and picnic tables :)

Tip below the review..
The carpark is very noisy, noisiest I have ever been to, as it‘s between a busy motorway and other streets, doesn‘t seem too safe, toilets 4-5 min walk away, the lots were relatively even, but under low trees…
I would recommend to just park in the stadium street, next to the toilets.. there is also a water fountain and due to the freedom camping rules you can stay for two nights, also relatively quite, even at day

Yes it is quite noisy, also at night, as it’s next to a motorway, but still a decent place to freedom camp for one night!
5 parking lots that are even, close to the toilets, which are clean.. do get locked at night tho. Water fountain and rubbish bins, but I couldn‘t see a shower, as it was mentioned in the comment before… must say that the noises didn‘t bother me, as I sleep with ear plugs, with them it was hardly noticeable and I am very sensitive to noises

Uneven surface, directly next to street, toilets 3-5 min walk away, do get locked at night

Must be the best freedom campingground I have been to so far and it‘s been quite a lot!
Very quite big parking lot with heaps of even space for sc campervans, clean toilets a min away, water fountain next to it and warm showers available at the gym for $2.50. only reason it‘s not 10/10 is that the toilets get locked at night, but that‘s the fact for most of them :)

It‘s OK, relatively far outside.
I personally found it quite annoying to climb out the car four times to enter the actual campingground.. two times to move the cone placed at a road to the campinggroup and two times to unlock and lock a gate to the actual campingground. Also there is ANOTHER gate to the whole regional park that gets locked in the evening, if you arrive later you have to wait for someone to open up for you.. other than that.. no flush toilets on the ground directly, found the toilets below average compared to other low cost campinggrounds, showers only 10 min walk away and not clean.. I did like some of the animals, made friends with a chicken over the week that I stayed, but this other walking alarm clock was horrible haha 5am every morning. I will say that the site as it is beautiful, very spacious and green
