Nice enough spot in a great little town.
We enjoyed being so close to the restaurants/bars to go for a drink in the evening and even went to one to watch the all blacks game in the morning!

As all the other reviews say, this is an awesome stop-over.
Registered inside the shop to freedom camp at the roadhouse. Serve hot food until 5.30/6, shop open until 7, incredibly friendly staff and loos open all night. Highly recommend staying here.

Awesome stop over.
We stayed here for two nights after not liking the look of Thames and really enjoyed it. Quite and safe area with great view. Coffee from the cafe over the road in the morning and even a cold shower next to the toilets. Definitely recommend.

Couldn’t recommend this campground enough!
Best place we’ve stayed in the whole of the Northland.
The turning into site is just after the bridge over the river (or before if coming from the south). Follow track along, past visitors centre, to the campsite.
Park up in one of the many little nooks and spaces amongst the trees, we had a great little spot away from other campers with privacy.
FREE HOT SHOWERS!! Couldn’t believe our luck! Facilities are relatively simple but clean and comfortable. Nice kitchen and toilets/showers.
Pay in cash using envelopes by the female toilets or you can pay by card in the visitors centre which you passed on your way in (open 8am - 4pm). We paid the next morning, be sure to fill out a form wether you’re paying by cash or not.
Was lovely falling asleep surrounded by Kauri trees and to the sound of kiwis.
And all of this for $13.50 per adult - such a bargain!
Only drawback was the mosquitoes as it’s near a river, be sure to bring repellent!

Not worth the money - best avoided!
We stayed here to treat ourselves to a little bit of (relative!) luxury as we travel in our camper - hot shower, wifi and to do some washing was our aim. And I’m sad to say it was far from it! Arrived to hear from reception that pool wasn’t working (no mention of this when we booked the night before!) and that washing machines only took $2 coins, of which there were none on the site so it meant a trip back into Russell to find change. Maybe this was our oversight but surely campsite tokens would solve this. Facilities are very basic and you only get a small amount of wifi before you have to pay, a real shame. And then to top it all off, when I went to have a shower I put my $2 coin in to find that there was no hot water and I’d just paid for a cold shower. Overall not what we’d hoped, and maybe $48 a night might seem like good value but when you add on all the extra costs, this was a big spend for us to leave disappointed. The only silver lining was that were able to hear kiwis in the night.
