We ended up staying here « by accident » after getting caught in a snow storm on our way to Queenstown.
We needed a place to stay and this was perfect.
The parking area was well defined, toilets were clean and even a sink to do your dishes.
Thank you Lumsden.

Nice location between Kaikoura and Picton.
No need to book, you can just turn up and pay cash in the kitchen.
Mostly permanent residents and not many available spaces, we got the last powered site. 15$/person is reasonable, kitchen and toilets are clean.
Felt kind of uneasy at times during the evening (we are 2 females), loud noises and banging coming from one of the campers.

We arrived at 5:45pm, and it was almost full already.
Toilets are relatively clean. Dump station with water outlet was practical.
As it is free, people arrive late hoping to find a spot and turn around in the parking which can be loud. Also, there was a gentleman in a 4x4 at 8:45am driving around the parking and stopping/looking at number plates while on the phone, very odd.

15$/person is way too much for this site.
A gravel path filled with holes is basically what it is. The toilet hadn’t been cleaned in forever.
I understand why DOC campsites require a fee, however the pricing remains consistent throughout the sites but the amenities definitely don’t.

Nice spot with hot showers and WIFI.
Only downside was seeing 29$ for 2 people (powered site) promoted as the « Winter offer » and still paying full price (42$) …
Hi Etoile Unfortunately our gas and wages costs have gone up significantly over the last 3 years so we can no longer offer our winter specials. We are still the lowest (equal) price in the area.

Amazing spot, especially the views in the morning !
Right at the starting point of the hiking tracks, so very practical if you want to be on them first thing in the morning or if you end late and don’t want to drive.

Nice spot, new and clean toilets.
We paid 10$/person online before arriving only to see that it is 8$/person if you pay by cash at the site. Don’t know why this site is more expensive online, other sites have always been equally price no matter the payment method.
The parking spots are all on a slope, we had a really hard time trying to get the van flat in our designated « already booked online » spot.

Reasonably priced for the amenities, bathrooms were IMPECCABLE.
Only downside was being close to other campers even though the site was half empty and paying 1$ for 6 minutes hot shower.
Would recommend after the leg burning Roys Peak hike.

Nice spot, enough toilets (some long drop and some flush spread out on the site) plus a couple of sinks to do your dishes.
10$/pax is a reasonable price, given that there isn’t much else around. You can pay by card or cash at the entrance (which is a bonus for people like us who don’t carry cash).
If you want some privacy, park on the grassy areas in the middle or closer to the road. On both nights we stayed there, people tried (DESPERATELY) to squeeze between us and the trees even though the terrain was uneven, just to be near the river.
