We stayed one Sunday night at this campsite.
We parked in the sports center parking lot and there were three other campervans there. There aren’t any signs specifying any spots to stay in so we just chose a spot. There was a toilet block of five bathrooms and one bathroom was open the entire time we were there. You could hear the traffic from the road but it was from a distance so our sleep was not inhibited at all. There are lights on in the parking lot throughout the night. Nice free campsite would recommend.

After a wonderful day at Pukorokoro Shorebird Center and Nature reserve, we went to this campsite which is in the same parking lot as the giant oyster catcher bird sculpture.
The bathrooms are 24hours and clean, also lighted throughout the night and at the other end of the parking lot by the playground. There is a trash can as well in the freedom camping section of the parking lot. Had a wonderful rest and beautiful views. Also would recommend the pink shop, we stopped in for breakfast and the woman was really accommodating when they didn’t have what we originally ordered and friendly. Definitely recommend this campsite!

Stayed for two nights at this campsite and had a very enjoyable experience.
The bathrooms were clean and always open when we needed them. There are ten official freedom camping spots; but there were campers all spread out near that section (it is off season so this may have been the reason for relaxed rules). We had a beautiful view of fin rock and left our van in the parking lot over night while we stayed over on tiritiri Matangi island feeling perfectly safe that it would be okay. There is a marina cafe and even a British cafe that sells pasties! Had a great time and would definitely recommend this freedom camping spot to others.
