The walks, the views have to make this a must-do experience.
We went late April on a clear day and the camp was pretty full and the facilities were creaking a bit from the numbers.. DOC clean them every day and empty the rubbish, tested drinking water so that justified the $15 per head.
If you plan on doing the Hooker. Walk.. which is well worth it, we suggest going early as it gets really busy, the occasional folk with sound systems etc...
If you like your wilderness in solitude, maybe go for a different walk.

Beside a river open, tree lined places to park/camp.
Whitcliffs is like an English country village. The domain is peaceful and welll kept. Toilets are clean. Sinks and water provided. Picnic tables, bbq available.

Good toilets.
Online payment preferred. No internet reception!
We came in late one night in mid April and it was like coming into an American civil war camp. Crowded, smoke, fires, dogs. friendly tho. A lot of the campers were here for gold prospecting. It's a real thing here. Nice site, for a night. Interesting walks.

This is our standout camping spot so far..
beautiful, peaceful with a lot of birdlife. Clean toilets, (with paper!) water, (not for drinking) BYO shower... Everything we needed really.
Lake Alexandrina camp is actually connected, it's the same camp on the shores of a different lake. LA had lots of permanents, LM is better for casual campervans IMO. Access road is good.
You can explore Tekapo and Mt John from here without the expensive camp in Tekapo.
$10pp
