This is shown in the app as a $$$ site.
It’s not, it’s free!! You pay (much let than Rotorua prices) to go to the geothermal attractions (which are terrific) and then you can stay in the parking lot overnight. It’s a beautiful, quiet spot with great facilities.

Expensive but worth it.
Beautiful campsite with excellent facilities. Very friendly staff. We literally had the whole camper van area to ourselves for 4 nights. Great restaurants nearby… Eggcentric Cafe and Cooked. The glass bottom boat trip was terrific. And you must go to Lonely Bay, just beautiful. When you go to Hot Water Beach don’t go too early vs low tide. The locals joke that they wait for the tourists to get fed up and leave then go lounge in the hot pools they’ve dug!

Noisy!
Right next SH1. The traffic continued all night even though Saturday into Sunday. Toilets ok. Very convenient for Hobbiton attraction.

Wish we’d stayed longer!
Came here for one night as convenient for the ferry. But we loved the location and the camp site. Good, clean facilities. Make sure you feed the animals (don’t turn your back on the goat!) And take the waterfall walk… you’ll need good boots, persevere with the trail as you can get right under the falls. And time it right so you see the glow worms on the walk back. Terrific.

Great place for first stop after picking up camper van in Christchurch.
Very nice powered site overlooking the harbour. Great facilities, new, clean. Nice walking trail down to Akaroa. Good restaurants and cafes, recommend Ma Maison. Also the Black Cat dolphin watching cruise.

Probably our favourite campground of a six week trip.
Such a beautiful location. Laid back and quite even though quite busy. Basic but clean toilets. There is recycling here. And a great cafe for breakfast down the street. But highlights are the beach, seabirds and sunrise.

Wanaka probably our favourite stop in our 6 week trip.
This campground immaculate! Nice walk into town. Don’t miss the Lake Bar or Black Peak Gelato. Also the food trucks on Brownston St. Roy’s Peak walk is tough but worth it.
South Island ▷ Coastal Otago ▷ Portobello ▷
4.5/5
Loved Portobello and the peninsula!
Great campground, good sized sites and facilities. Walking into the village with a store, 2 restaurants and a fish & chip shop (recommended). Top destination for wildlife. Recommend the albatross reserve and Victoria beach. Sandfly Bay is a must… maybe 20 sea lions on the beach!

Great campground.
Good, clean facilities. Really nice “farmlet” with animals. The glow worm dell is worth a visit. But the star is the Tasman Sea and amazing beach. Incredible sunsets, great night sky. Beware the ocean after dark though!

Great spot to overnight going to/from the ferry.
Nice, big sites and very good facilities. The town is lovely with very nice cafes.
South Island ▷ Fiordland ▷ Milford Sound - Fiordland National Park ▷
4.5/5
Yes, relatively expensive but fantastic facilities.
Great bar & restaurant. Lovely wooded sites. Watch for the Wekas!
Enjoyed the Milford boat trip and one of the woodland walks. A the drive from / to Te Anau is breathtaking.
South Island ▷ Fiordland ▷ Manapouri ▷
4.5/5
Yes basic facilities and small sites.
But lovely camp site with great hosts! For us Manapouri much preferred to Te Anou. Make sure you book ahead for the Doubtful Sound boat trip. And check out the lake to lake trail for cycling or walking.

Really liked it here.
Big site for our camper van. Good facilities. Be aware though that you are right next to the Abel Tasman Aquataxi stop. Very convenient but also means lots of activity and noise from about 8.30 am. AT reserve is beautiful. Book your taxi ahead and do some of the walks. Also sea kayaking a must. And don’t miss the Park Cafe about 20 minutes walk towards the reserve. Great food and drinks. And crazy open mic on Thursdays!
