SUBLIME.
We came for one night (March 2nd 2023) in an RV for a powered site and booked the stargazing experience where you float in inflatable hammocks in the thermal pools. We cannot recommend this enough: it was mind blowing.
BEAUTIFUL GROUNDS: you’ll be greeted by dozens of very friendly rabbits, ducks, and birdlife who will likely waddle by your site to say hello. Stick around for sunset and you’ll see a majestic view of the mountains reflected in glassy lake. This is a very safe and family-friendly site. It’s large but it doesn’t feel rammed in, or impersonal. You’ll be given a wee map to help locate things and there’s plenty of space.
CLEANLINESS: Loos, kitchen, and laundry were sparkling. Four washing machines and four dryers.
TOP TIP: Bring lots of small change for the laundry and such. I think some or all of the showers are free but I used the ones at the springs so I can’t be sure. Many of the shops in town have a policy of not giving out small change so it’s best to plan ahead.
One improvement would be if the website said which sites have access to water on the pitch as the cheaper slots have to park up by a tap (there’s a fair few and it’s minor gripe).
Previous reviews said there was only one dump site but there are now two. I never saw more than two vans queing.
This is a FANTASTIC choice for long or short stays. People in the cabins looked so cosy and happy and the site draws in campers froms around the world but also local Kiwis who have given it their seal of approval.
Thank you so much to the wonderful, hard-working staff who made our stay so enjoyable. We’ve driven all over the north and south but Lake Tekapo really stands out as a magical place.
Hi Sarah
Wow, thank you so much for this amazing review! We really appreciate you taking the time to do this for us and the staff will be thrilled to hear your comments. Amazing that you had such a great time with us, and the stargazing experience at Tekapo Springs is great on a clear night!
Hopefully see you back here one day!
Kind regards

SACRED AND SERENE.
There is something truly special in the air of Spirits Bay. We arrived in the magic hour and remembered our loved ones as the sun set over the beach. There were maybe 5 other, very spaced out, campers, and it was so quiet. Tread gently, there are small birds nesting in the grass. The geology in this area is stunning and there are horses too.
- The gravel drive is fine in an RV if you go under 20km
- Bring bug spray
- I didn’t see the drop toilets / cold showers but other campers seemed happy
Simply magical. A must for anyone touring the north island who wants to experience a serence and peaceful campsite that feels like the edge of the world.
