Easy to get a permit, quiet campsite in the forest on the riverside.
Didn‘t feel too safe. Rainwater showers were decent, long drops were not. Not clean, no toilet paper. Maybe I just stayed there on the wrong day, besides that the campsite itself is beautiful and it is free!

Very nice spot with very nice owners.
Big grassy spots, some of the cleanest facilities I‘ve seen, good free wifi. Close to any Taranaki trips you might want to do and also clos to town center for shopping, food options etc. Also some nice fairy lights at night. Felt very welcomed and safe.

Awesome campsite!
Big and grassy, as described bins and water on every powered site, 20$ adult. Very clean facilities, shops and everything you need close by. Beach within walking distance. Owners are super friendly!

Really good DOC campsite, 8$ per night.
Toilets could be a bit cleaner, but they‘re flush toilets so that‘s always a plus. There are grassy areas for tents and also just a lot of spaces. Gets filled with cars a bit during the day, since it is literally rhe beginning of the pinnacles track (which is also very worth it!). Beautiful views, beautiful sunsets. Definitly recommend. Also best thing I found in the reviews: drive the probably 20km down the road to the seal colony! You can just park up and watch heeps of them! It is so worth it! And the drive along the coast is a plus too:)

Nice grassy campsite with lots of shade from a lot of trees.
10$ per night and WITH power. Couldn‘t believe it. You pay on the little house when you ger through the gate to the domain. Not far from town center with some shops and food options. Fresh water and dump station. There is a small house with two separate free hot showers that get cleaned apparently every day. Lots of clean toiltets as well. Small kitchen room with a hot water boiler and a sink to do your dishes.
I think it gets used at night by some people with no home, but they were very polite and I felt safe no matter and I was a solo traveling female. 7,50$ with no power btw.

Needed power for the night, so the free one wasn‘t an option.
Bit on the pricey side, but was welcomed very nicely. Facilities are spotless, lots of showers and toilets and sinks. Big kitchen, a lot of bins to separate your trash and right on the beach with beautiful sights of the area and lighthouse. I opted to not pay more to be on the beach with my camper and very glad I did. I got a nice grassy side, protected by fences which was nice since it was a bit stormy. Wasn‘t many people around my spot (most opted for the beach side) so I got the quietest night in quite a while and loved every second of it!
Got some free wifi, but didn‘t work on my phone, didn‘t bother me, but just so you know there is wifi if you need it!

After travelling both islands, can‘t recommend.
Grassy tent sites and gravel sites with power. Got a spot on the outside corner right on the main street with my van. Simply didn‘t need power that night. Sites were rather small, area I got placed didn‘t seem too well maintained. Price was 47$ unpowered, which was the highest I paid in all Aoteaora. Grass was very high, tree cutdowns were just left by the fence. The person at reception on arrival was very nice, also gave me the wifi password and told me the wifi is basically no good. After seeing my spot, I went up to the reception and asked if there was maybe another site available that was just a bit further away from the street and not so high grass. Didn’t have much hope, since I booked same day and figured I got one of the last spots for that night. Different person at reception (maybe owner), seemed annoyed by the question. Got offered the same site on the other side of the park. I wouldn‘t know how to get my camper in there or out, so I decided not to switch. What really made me feel unwelcome was the fact that around me and on the unpowered spots that were further away from the street no one pulled up that day. I figured okay last available spot, it is what it is. But all the spots stayed empty. And for 47$ that was just not very nice. Facilities were clean, showers were hot and free, the water just sprayed to the sides so you don‘t really know where to stand.

Absolutley loved this campsite.
Grant thw owner is so nice, has heeps of tips what to do and is always up for a chat when you need something. Stayed here for a week over the time the cyclone hit and also stayed in a cabin for two nights due to that. Clean facilities, everything you need. Really good free wifi, huge sites for a tent or van. Grassy and very well maintained. Power and water on every site. 20$ a night. Beach within walking distance (small beach), hot water beach is a 5min drive. Do stock up on grocieres before. The gas station and general store have the most important items, but of course varitey is small. Bakery is very good and the town center is a nice walk along the beach/ coastline). Would highly recommend!

Really nice campsite!
Clean and lots of facilities, good wifi, dump station and fresh water, very nice and maintained grassy sides, good working free wifi. Very clos to all the things Rotorua and the area has to offer. Very nice people in reception, very helpful. 20$ adult powered site, can‘t ger better than that in a very touristy area like Rotorua.

I was welcomed very nicely by one of their workers.
Powered site was 30$. The spots were on the smaller side but fine. Can‘t say much about the kitchen since I didn‘t use it, same goes for the horse riding. Toilettes were nice and clean, can‘t say the same for the showeres. They were free and hot, but the ones one the campsite were very dirty. The one by the house was a bit better. It is a nice walk to the beach and there it‘s just beautiful! Not the best side espacially for this price, since it was quite dirty and the facilities were rather small and some dirty, but it is a farm and it was decent for one night.

Very nice cozy campsite for 10$, no powered sites available, but it has wifi!
Owner comes around in the early evening, collects fee and hands out password. I saw in the reviews, that he does glowworm tours on his property and I highly recommend! For 10$ you get to know so much and even did a nice talk on stars!
Clean drop toilet with water for washing hands, no shower.

Not really lakeview, but still nice lookouts on the hills.
Powered site 23$ for 1 adult, free hot showers and unlimitied wifi. Facilities are clean and modern. Wifi is not so helpful, but better in certain areas. Nice walk into the city, so good location. Would recommend. Really nice and helpful staff!

Beautiful campsite, gravel road to get there.
Usually 2$ for showers, unless you pay cash. Prices on here not quite correct. Paid 40$ for 1 adult with campervan and power. The really nice lady gave me a spot with direct beach/sea view. You walk 5m and are on the beach. Beautiful walk for kilometers on the beach with sea lions. Very tranquil campground. Clean and good facilities. Would definitly recommend! Wifi included.

The whole place is filled wirh fairy lights during the night, felt really safe and good. The married couple taking care of this place ist super nice and very helpful. Absolutely spotless in every area!

Honestly stay here!!
This is one of those places that instantly make you feel comfortable! It feels like its own little green world. Spotless facilities, outdoor kitchen (with roof), free showers and well working wifi. The owner Kate makes you feel so welcome and helps with everything. This really feels like a retreat!

Really nice campsite.
Very clean, very clean and nice facilities, free hot showers. Penguins are just about 10min away, but also come to the campground sometimes. Right on waterfront. You do a paper check-in and pay when office is open. I think I paid 23/25$ for an unpowered site for 1 adult. Would definitly recommend.

I went here by a lucky accident since all the free spots were full super early in the day.
But I‘m so glad I did that I returned for a second night. When I drove up the first time the sign said full and I was frustrated since I‘d been looking for a while for a place for the night, but the lady who owns this place came up to me and told me she still had a spot and took me right to it. And what a spot! Right on the beach, beautiful sight! 10$/ adult per night, drinking water, a small library, a place to do your dishes and two clean long drops. Got an even better spot for the second night. Really lovely owner and a great spot for a very decent price!

Beautiful campsite, definitly one of the most beautiful ones I stayed at during my trip through this country.
22$ unpowered for 1 adult. Free showers, clean facilities. Wifi around 2GB, free and fairly decent. Heaps of spaces, lots of shadow with lots of trees and an amazing look on the sound. 2min drive from the Doubtful Sound cruises, which I highly recommend!
All in all felt really safe, would stay again immediately!

Stayed the night after the ferry, because the only free spot in Wellington was full by noon.
And I‘m very glad about it. It‘s a quick drive to get here, gate closes at some point but I think around 9pm. 8$ per adult, you just pay like on a DOC campsite, two flushing, clean toilets (only one was working when I was there, but wasn‘t a problem) and a sink to get fresh water or do some dishes. Campsite is deep enough in the woods so I did‘nt hear a thing from the street. Big grass area for tents, but also quite some spaces for Campervans. Highly recommend espacially on a stormy day to rather go here than stay in Wellington!

I think I can just agree with everyone.
Big free campsite, with the most beautiful sight you can imagine. 4 long drops on the lower level, but even for people who don‘t want to walk as far to the loo, there still enough spots on the lower level with just as good sights!
