2.5/5
Beautiful location, right on the lake edge.
But it was one of the most expensive sites we used in a month. Facilities are clean but old & tired. Despite the price, you have to pay for the showers. Lights in shower/toilets are on a timer, and it's not long enough for a quick shower and getting dressed!! Luckily someone else came into the loos just afer I had been plunged into darkness. Not a good experience!

Great location, fantastic views of Mount Cook - we were really lucky that the cloud disappeared completely while we were here.
Very friendly and helpful reception. Lovely wood burner in the lounge attached to the kitchen. Showers/toilets basic but very clean, and lashings of hot water even in June.

We had a pitch right on the beachfront...woke up to a glorious sunrise over the waves. Facilities were really clean and staff very friendly & helpful.

We hired a Base Jumper 2 from Auckland for a 4 week tour of North and South Islands and had a fantastic holiday.
The service from Wilderness was brilliant, from our initial enquiries, booking, transport to & from the airport and when we had a few small glitches with the van - including delivery of a replacement van to our campsite on North Island. Everyone we dealt with was very helpful and friendly. The BJ2 is a great size for 2 - really well kitted out, very comfy and easy to drive. We cooked in the van nearly every night. We will be back to NZ and we will use Wilderness again.

Perfect for what we wanted - somewhere to camp as close to the early morning ferry as possible.
Really helpful guy at the site, which is basically a car park with power, loos and showers. Excellent facilities, very clean. Right in the city centre next to he port, so it's not quiet, but we slept fine.

Really good location if you want to visit Kaikoura, especially in the evening...only a few minutes walk back into town.
It is on a main road, but we didn't find it too noisy at night. Well maintained, clean and lovely to showers. Two very friendly cats!
Hi there Sue,
Many thanks for taking the time to write your review. We are glad to hear you were happy with your stay here, thanks for the great feedback. Yes, they are two very spoilt cats - arrived here as stray kittens and all the staff have been looking after them ever since. :)

This is not a commercial site - it is run by a really helpful and friendly guy as a hobby.
It was a haven for us on a cold and very wet winters evening when 2 commercial sites we'd tried were closed. Pretty field for campervans, powered sites available. Perfectly adequate facilities with kitchen and free hot showers. Don't expect or compare it to a Top 10 or Kiwi site and you won't be disappointed.

Fantastic site right in the heart of the village.
Very friendly, great facilities, very clean. Pretty site in amongst the trees - great view over mountains and river from site 21. Really helpful people in the Village information centre. Great walking even in winter although too icy for Tongariro Crossing.
