The walk to Fox cave was excellent!
We didn't go on to the Ballroom. You do need to ford the river twice to get to the cave, so bring water sandals for the knee-deep river.

Heaps of sandflies and heaps of people...and a long dirt road to navigate to get there.
Not all that...the DOC sites on the lake north of Franz Josef are better.

Not as good as all the pictures and local hoopla would have you believe...and packed with every tourist in Golden Bay.
Likes Hamurana Springs on Lake Rotorua much better!

Yikes!
This waterfall is almost directly on the highway, making it a must-stop for EVERY tour bus over Haast Pass. What's the big deal...a nice waterfall spilling across an uncrossable river crowded with tourists. yuck. Now the waterfalls at Rob Roy glacier out of Wanaka...those are breathtaking!!

Fantail Falls is nice, however, explore the hidden canyon just 100m downstream...a-ha, then you're in for a full adventure.
NEAT!

Exquisite experience!!
All the tunnels thru the headlands are amazing, bring a headlamp to explore some of the dark tunnels. Also don't miss the headlands trail to the lighthouse--amazing!!

The baby seals are mostly there during the NZ winter.
Damn...we saw none in December, on two different trips. Alas

A brilliant walk without any tourists at all on it.
After the crowd scene at the glaciers, a great beach/bush walk without a soul around was really 100% pure NZ!!

This tramp was excellent...on one condition: the people we saw at the end viewpoint, where the picnic table is, didn't have a copy of our NzFrenzy guidebook, so they didn't know to bushwhack a few meters
down the slope, like the book says, to find the WAY better viewpoint stretching all the way down to the Tasman. Without NzFrenzy none of us would have found or bothered to bushwhack a bit further...but this tip changed the view from a 6 to a 10. YES!!!! No horde of glacier-area tourists at all---difficult but highly recommended!!

Good short walk on west side of Haast Pass....nobody else was there, making it even better.
You gotta walk over the cobbled rocks to see the blue of the Haast River right at the falls.

Nearby to the nice DOC campground.
Great little loop walk that nobody seems to know about--bring a headlamp though...and water sandals are best for the wet tunnels.
