Fine for one night.
Clean public toilets open all night. However, really loud trains will pass in the middle of the night (we heard 3). We also had two lovely gentlemen (sarcasm) banging on our window around 2:30 AM for the hell of it. Hope you have a better experience.

4.0/5
Ordinary car park with RV friendly spots.
Toilets one block away in the New World car park, possibly open 24/7. Mostly quiet besides some barking dogs, but we felt safe all night.

4.0/5
Central location with 24/7 toilets and drinking water.
The campervan spots are clearly marked with signs and painted blue lines on the ground. We felt safe while we stayed. It will be a tad noisy in the morning since it is a car park.

Ordinary car park used by locals during work hours.
Good, central location. Unfortunately, all toilets within reasonable walking distance were closed by 7 PM.

Great free camping near town center located on the northeast part of Akaroa Recreation Ground.
The spots are clearly marked with the blue self-contained stickers. Drinking water near the skate park, and flush toilets a little further south. When we arrived around 4 PM on a Wednesday, lot was half full. It was completely full by 6 PM.
South Island ▷ West Coast ▷ Hokitika ▷
4.5/5
Great free camp spot with flat gravel and clean flush toilets.
15 minute drive from Hokitika. 2 km off the main highway, so it’s nice and quiet at night. Easily fits 8-10 small/medium campervans, but you could squeeze more in if necessary. Thank you to the Treetops Cafe team who maintains this awesome campsite!
