Place was CROWDED in mid January and we were “lucky” to get a bunch of latecomers who set up camp right next to us proceeding to partying til we had to ask them (politely and unpolitely) to shut the F
*** up at around midnight. Ugh. The views were fine but we were mostly cooking in the sun til it went away at around 8:30 pm. Queenstown was also crowded so we ran away fast, so in general a not-so-good all around experience. I’d say stay away in the busy January days (we get it, having lived in places with similar circumstances in the US West—short summer months with loads of tourists, locals wanting to do their thing). Ugh.

Damn birds, ¡pinches pájatos!
Just kidding ;), amazing songbirds chirping throughout the day but more so (as expected) at dawn/dusk. Campground is out of the way so do bring supplies (beer!) before heading up the gravel road. A bit muddy in spots and very muddy on the main trail/track, despite having been there in the dry(et) summer months. Spotty 4G, though strong enough to book right there (Vodafone/Spark networks). My husband has been having trouble with the DOC website but it worked out fine for me, so heads up! I’d recommend creating your account in a spot with a reliable 4G connection, luckily it worked out for us even in this “remote” site.

Awesome campground by a lovely creek; despite the summer crowds we had a nice and quiet camping spot and enjoyed a lovely short hike around the place.

Great location for an out and back to Milton Sound.
Despite the crowds, quiet and peaceful. It was covered in mist when we came in and were in awe of the spectacular scenery once the clouds cleared in the am. Don’t miss the easy yet lovely tramp/hike through the old growth. Toilets were fine despite the crowd, we only wished for more information/context from the DOC, environmental interpretation/education wise.
