Our trip in NZ is great so far but our experience with Backpacker campervans is mixed.
The girl who helped us didn't know anything about the van and brought us the wrong childseats. We had to ask for the picknicktable and chairs, otherwise it would be forgotten.
One day later at the campground, we discovered that the wastwater hose was still open.
In the next days, a list of broken things showed up, the most important things were: one tyre with very little profile, an almost flat battery, cd player didn't work, one of the windows couldn't be closed.
We got some things fixed in Whangarei, for the others we stopped in Auckland. Here Louis helped us good en quickly.
But however: you know you can't expect a new van, but you don't expect things to be broken. I'm wondering whether our van from 2005will be rented out again.
Nice that things got repaired but it took us some time!

Maybe their vans aren't the best, their service is. When we brought back the van, the problems we had (as mentioned above) were excellently compensated. Thanks again.

They are busy upgrading the park. Friendly staff.

We did the daytour today and it was very well run by Toby and the others.
They provided good information about the things we saw (and when to go to the toilet :-)
Altough I'm not that into powerstations it was quite impressive. Doubtful sound is beautiful. Not as spectacular as Milford but much quieter. Go there with this company. They don't have the flashiest bus but is that what's it about?

I don't understand the hype about this campground.
Is the most expensive one we stayed at (in 2,5 months!). We payed 65 nzd for a powered site with 2 adults and 2 infants. Wifi didn't reach to our site. Ok, showers are free, but we had them free and as good and clean in many other places.

I am so disheartened that you did not enjoy your stay with us. December and January are our busiest months so you would have been here during our high season. We did offer one infant free of charge so we were hoping that made it a little bit cheaper for you.
In regards to our wifi- We have had to upgrade and invest a few thousand dollars to get a better system as it was not working properly for a few weeks- Apologies for that and it is definately fixed now!
We dont charge anything extra apart from the laundry so it's not just the showers that are free its our courtesy coach, spas, sauna, bbq area etc. I am sorry that you think we are over-rated but please come back another time and we will let you stay for free with free internet that works! :)

Wings Over Whales

A great experience!
We were lucky to see 2 whales and a lot of dolphins.
You get a short introduction, that's nice for the context and safety.
We booked on the internet and filled in we had a kiwi-card (for discount). However, we had quite a hassle to get the discount back. So if you have a kiwi-card, call them and don't book on the internet!

Friendly staff, very clean and good facilities including a good family bathroom and heaps of washing machines and dryers.
Good value! One of the best places we stayed at in 2,5 months in NZ.

Let me warn you, there's no green parklike setting as well:-)

nice sites for tents down by the river but powered sites for vans aren't.
