Great little stop on the river with a decent public toilet across the street.
The road can get busy daytimes but quietens down enough from 9 or 10 pm to make sleep easy. Good signage indicating where freedom campers are allowed to park between.

We liked this spot and came here twice.
On the north end by the okay public toilets there is water and a dump station. The sign said 4 campers max but perhaps 10-12 stayed per night and noone seemed to bother us. We parked more southerly under a huge overhanging tree that felt sheltered and lovely. Busy road with a couple locals revving past screaming "yahooo" at the campers but it quieted down by 10 pm. One car drove closely past us as my bf was outside working the chocks. A young man growled "would you like me to give you a MacKenzie?" rather threateningly which made me wonder if we'd have our tires knifed in the dark but rather stangely I suppose, we would stay again in spite of that.

Spontaneous stay for the night coming down off Gumdiggers Road above campsite looking for gumdigging history up there but finding the land had all been blocked by local iwi.
Very pretty campsite run by a rather distracted but pleasant young lady. Good price at $30 for 2 of us. Long drop toilets must bring your own bog roll but they were clean. Many, many locals dirt and quad biking on beach below site all day but they all went home late dinner time so was quiet after that.

Pretty and quoet place with alot of space for campers.
When we arrived late Dec perhaps 1/3 the site was too boggy to park in but we managed to find a spot nonethleless. Decent public toilets a short walk away and a very pretty little jetty - great photo ops! A nice spot to stay on our way deeper into Whangetei Heads.
