When leaving a very positive review for a free campsite, I also think in the back of my head I hope it doesn't become too flooded with other tourists.
In this case the campsite is so enormous, you could comfortably fit 500 campervans and still it would be allright for everyone. Seriously, the place is huge, I can't imagine it filling up in a random occasion.
There's about 6-8 (drop)toilets around, the newest ones are perfectly clean.
There are several fireplaces available, and some public bbq's.
The location is great, you can be right beside a river, or a little back on some separate fields with smaller more private areas.
The road leading up to the campsite is also very pretty, and perfectly fine to drive. The last 500 meters is gravel, but still nothing to worry about.
There is also running water available, with signs saying "please boil before drinking".
It is by far one of the best camping spots I have ever visited, and the best in NZ thus far! And also, it's completely free of charge!

Definitely 10/10.
Super friendly owner and personell at the cafe (good food!). River is good for swimming, although wouldn't let children go in becouse of the current. Super chill camping spots all around, good facilities and some beautiful walks. A 10 minute walk through the forest gets you to the "1st waterfall" with many glowworms at night!
We paid $20 per person (unpowered), great value for money.

Nice and well maintained holiday park.
Paid $49 for 2 people, powered site. Great park for children, lots of playing areas. Showers and toilets very clean.

Paid $52 per night for a 2 person powered site (no unpowered available).
The facilities were dated but clean enough. There is wifi, but unusable slow.
Swimming in the lake is a short drive away. Friendly manager.
It's okay, but in my opinion not worth $52.

For $56 (2p powered, one night) it's very overpriced.
Only 2 showers and 3 toilets for about 50 sites. The toilets themselves aren't clean, and the sinks are surrounded by dead mosquitos. The wifi is okay, as long as you are close to the toilet building, and no large campervans are in the way.
The view on the lake is very nice though, and it's a few minutes drive to the village centre. Friendy staff aswell.

Beautiful secluded spot, right by the beach and a 5 min drive from Whitianga.
Off season so almost had the place to ourselves.
Self contained only.
Happened to arrive just as the campground manager was visiting, otherwise the rules are posted on the campground itself, 100 meters after the gate on the left.

Can confirm that the place is still available for overnight camping with the new owners.
The food is nice with large portions, public toilets available. The barkeeper wasn't very talkative, but still friendly people.

Perfectly clean and well organised campsite.
Paid 42 for 2 persons unpowered, great view over the lake and the mountains. Very friendly and helpful owner, friendly locals too.
Moana is a nice little village, there is a bar and restaurant nearby the campsite.
Only downside is the paid showers ($1 for about 5 mins), but then again $21 per person isn't much for entry aswell.
