Didn't live up to hype - even if the blowholes had actually blown!
Rugged coastline but nothing amazing - stop if you are going past for a quick look but don't stay or go out of your way. Get the impression that the tide is rarely high enough for the blowholes to blow!

Spent a couple of hours (relaxing) at the hot springs in the numerous hot pools and lazy river.
It was pretty busy but there were plenty of different pools to try. Only downside was that it wasn't really the rugged/natural alpine setting described!

Stopped here for a night during a quick couple of days in the Catlins.
Perfect beach location, five minutes walk to brilliant long, sandy beach with sealions and fur seals. Clean, modern facilities at this small site - only negative, just one shower.

HiTop van itself in good condition and only minor issues - mircrowave breaking - so far!
Demo at start not great, however, but when we got microwave fixed (and a heater) service was very good.

Thanks for taking the time to comment. Thats is no good about the microwave breaking however I am glad that you were able to get it fixed and enjoy the rest of your holiday! No doubt a heater would be great for those chilly NZ evenings :)

5 star campsite just after Athurs Pass on way to westcoast.
Great shower facilities, BBQs and spacious van sites overlooking mountains. Walks from the site to waterfalls/glowworms etc.

Did a days kayaking on Doubtful Sound; included a boat cruise across Lake Manapouri, a bus trip and 4-5 hours kayaking on the Sound.
Brilliant day, our guide was very knowledgeable about the Sound and nature and we saw dolphins, penguins and seals - and barely any other people.

Did the full day glacier hike, which was excellent.
Even in pouring rain!! Our guide was extremely knowledgable and helpful and we loved going in and through ice chambers and sliding through an ice cave. A brilliant day.

Only 10 powered sites in beautiful setting, only 10metres from Lake Manapouri. Ideal for Doubtful Sound trips, very relaxing.

Great walk (well, climb) to peak overlooking Mount Cook.
Three hours one way to top (last bit is pretty steep/slippery) but well worth it for stunning views of Mt Cook and Glacier semi-hard walk. Take a picnic and your time coming down!
