You can walk from this campsite to the lake and the tiny township.
Even though there is plenty of space DOC limits it to ten vehicles so worth getting there earlier and then visiting the lake. Nice peaceful setting with great views of the countryside.

There was no charge to stay there.
The site was near a stream with trees and had good toilet facilities.

This was lovely with the autumn leaves.
Very few other vans and a great view of the lake. We didn’t hear much if any road noise.

We were here late April and it was extremely cold even with a gas heater.
However the sunset was stunning as were the mountain views and the surrounding trees had autumn colours. So if you are geared up for colder weather well worth it.

A bit of noise from the port and you are basically in a car park.
But the park and beach are close by and very handy to the town centre.

Good views of the mountains and the campground is right at the start of the Hooker Valley walk.
Good toilets with lights at night.

We were there in April school holidays and it was one of the most popular well used freedom camping spots.
There was still plenty of room but in more popular months it might pay to get there earlier in the day. The toilet was basic but the views of the lake fabulous.
