Great spot, handy to the centre of town and right next to the pub.
Tap for water, large bin, public toilets about 200m walk away. Large, clearly defined spaces for parking. Only a couple of other campers were there when we stayed, but this was while Aucklanders couldn't travel so it could be busier normally

But was an awesome spot when I first visited!
-STILL CLOSED AS OF 18/12/21-
Heaps of space, toilets weren't great, but the river was picturesque enough to make up for it

Staff lovely, facilities decent, but a bit pricey.
Woken up in the night by a group of loud, drunk men sitting in the courtyard. They were asked by several people to be quiet, but took ages to move on. Couldn't find any contact information for any management who might have helped with the situation

Penguins are the main attraction of this site.
Plenty of rubbish bins, okay toilets. Not the quietest place, as plenty of people are around recreationally, and the port can be quite noisy. A few interesting characters about. Unclear as to whether you can freedom camp in the parking closest to the water, or only by the toilets

Beautiful location, and they've set up a really lovely campsite amongst the trees.
Very pricey at $60 for 2 in a powered site! Facilities are nice, but kitchen is very basic. I would have imagined that for that price you wouldn't have to bring in your own utensils. And no hand dryers in the toilets, only one just at the entrance to the bathroom block, which seems really silly and unhygienic, having to touch the door handles with wet hands.
On a side note, if you're going for a Milford cruise, the carpark just before the wharf is an absolute ripoff (min $25). You're much better finding the free park further down from the lodge and walking 20min to the wharf.

$25 for 2 people, which is pretty reasonable.
Kitchen and shower facilities were very basic, but seemed the best campground option in the area for price and proximity to the city centre.

The best freedom camping spot I've visited!
Tidy toilets, rubbish bins, picnic tables, drinking water, sink for washing up, plenty of parks, quirky old train, friendly locals. Awesome to have a small town make freedom campers feel so welcome. I'd definitely recommend having a wander around the village and supporting local businesses. Roar Coffee are amazing.

$15 per person for unpowered site.
Great little campground, kitchen is well stocked with utensils, and showers don't cost extra. Washing machines are coin operated.

Beautiful spot on the lake.
Portaloo toilets were awful and not well maintained at all. Watch out for deer, rabbits, and sheep on the road if driving there at night!

Definitely the nicest freedom camping spot in Kaikoura.
Only 6 spaces which fill up fast, you really need to get there before 5. Sign says for campers to leave before 7am which is a bit of a drawback. Nice toilets, and rubbish/recycling bins are handy. Near the seal colony and right next to a seafood stall. The beach isn't one for relaxing on.

Tidy, flushing toilets and rubbish bins.
Nobody else there when we stayed, although a cheeky weka stopped by to visit! Great spot, a little more sheltered inland if you run into any west coast weather.

Friendly owners, facilities tick all the boxes, kitchen is well-stocked, and rates are cheap as. Sweeeeet

Sandflies weren't terrible in late spring - they were much worse further south.
Beautiful camping spot, pretty good toilets, and plenty of cheeky weka about! Awesome walk to Scott's Beach

Heaps of space (although I visited in the middle of winter).
A little exposed to the wind, toilets were clean and well-lit. Reasonably quiet during the evening. Easy drive to the ferry in the morning.

Not a huge amount of space for parking, but fairly out of the way area, so had the place to myself even though I showed up late on a Saturday night.
Cars would stop by throughout the night/morning to use the public toilets, so a little bit of noise/activity. The Duke's Nose hike is well worth doing when in the area.

Can be difficult to find when looking at google maps, be careful to look at the signs when driving deeper into the trees.
Lots of space, beautiful surrounding bush, walking tracks nearby, a basic toilet. Would definitely go back!
