This hike has been one of our absolute favourite activities in Northland.
The coastline is stunning here. The 5km took us about 1.5hrs one way. Stopped at Sandy Bay for a swim on the way back but the beach at Tapotupotu Bay is nicer. Bring plenty of water and cover up. It’s mostly exposed with little shelter. Water refills possible at Cape Reinga toilets (treated water)

The spot itself was fine but nothing special.
Seems like a spot locals hang out a bit, surprising amount of cars coming and going. Didn’t feel unsafe just not as relaxing as expected. 2 basic long drop toilets, no water other than the stream.

Absolutely stunning spot!!!
Definitely one of our favourite sites in NZ so far. Well maintained by DOC, worth the $15pp/night. Clean long drop toilets (flush toilets available at entrance) and cold showers. Scenery is incredible and the beach and lagoon perfect for a refreshing dip. Definitely do the walk to Cape Reinga from here - incredibly beautiful 1.5-2 hour hike.

Beautiful spot to park up for a night or two.
Lots of trees for shade and plenty of space. There are public toilets at the Campbell St end and also a dump station which was an added bonus. Great spot.

Cost per person is now $20 which is (as others have said) rather overpriced for what you get.
We paid less at a lovely camp ground in Ngongotaha (Willowhaven) with kitchen and hot water so not sure where the council is getting their pricing from. Quiet enough overnight, but extremely popular with day visitors. Not surprising as it is a lovely spot - great for swimming, water sports and a picnic :)

Great quiet spot for staying overnight free of charge close to Rotorua.
Make sure you head past the first car park to the top / second car park which is where camping is allowed. The only downside is that there’s only a long-drop toilet there with no water (hand sanitiser provided). The toilet at the bottom car park is much nicer. Also the phone signal is hit and miss. The walk along the river is lovely and you’ll often spot groups of rafters heading down the waterfalls here.
