We stayed here twice in Sep and Nov 2020 and it was one of our favourite freedom camping sites.
Great location on the lakefront and several large, clean toilets (though they are a bit of a hike from the furthest carpark). You'll have to arrive by early/mid afternoon to get a good spot.

Big campground with good, clean facilities.
The sites were on the smaller side and not separated (more plantings would be nice), so it might feel cramped when busy.

Really big space for freedom campers and reasonably close to the CBD (about $10 return to Uber, there's also a bus stop nearby).
We were here in Nov and the car park was about 75% full; it would pay to get here early in the busy season. New looking toilets were clean and well maintained.

One of our favourite freedom camping spots in the South Island.
Right by the pebble beach with wonderful views of sea, mountains and sunset. It was only a few minutes walk to the public toilets (at the other carpark) and the town shops. There was a bit of noise from the trains in the morning but overall a very good spot

We stayed one night before catching the ferry.
The facilities were clean and well maintained, fast free WiFi and the sites were spacious and flat, can't complain at all.

Great big camp ground in walking distance of Methven Town.
The facilities were a bit old but very clean and tidy, and there was heaps of cooking equipment in the kitchen which was helpful.

Our site was lovely, right by the river and trees.
Facilities were old but clean and tidy, the pool was great. The staff were very helpful and we also hired bikes from here, great bikes and excellent value. Only marked down because it was a bit noisy (with other big groups of travellers) and you had to pay for the hot shower

Stayed here twice in Sep and Nov 2020 on our way to the South Island.
Excellent location right near the water, great facilities and a very friendly, cosy vibe. It's ~$30 return to Uber into the city but that's not bad considering you won't stay anywhere as nice closer to the CBD. The cafe next door is highly recommended too.

We stayed a few nights here and really enjoyed it.
Great location by the river and walking distance to the rocks, cave and beach. The kitchen was a bit cramped + and some of the elements didn't work well so cooking dinner took a bit of patience. But the facilities were clean and tidy and having a dry room to dry out our wet clothes was a nice bonus.

A wonderful freedom camp site right on the beach front with big, clean toilets and even an outdoor cold shower.
It's a large car park with one side facing the beach, so arrive early to get the best spots. Also close to the lagoon which had a lovely walk.

4.5/5
Great campsite with well maintained toilets and a cooking shelter.
It was raining the whole time we were here so we didn't see much but the occasional glimpses of the surrounding mountains was cool, I bet it'd be amazing when it's clear and dry. Right across the road from the Blue Pools walk.

We stayed 2 nights here; 1 night in a standard motel and 1 in the campground.
We thought the motel room would be a "treat" but we actually enjoyed the campsite a lot more. The motel was very small for the price we paid and way too hot, and the bed was soft. The campsite, on the other hand, was in a beautiful spot surrounded by trees and the shared facilities were excellent. The on-site restaurant is highly recommended. Save your money and stay in your campervan (or spend your money at the restaurant instead!)

Similar to the first review, this felt like a very new campground (we could still smell the paint!).
Very clean facilities, fast WiFi and big sites. But it felt a bit 'cold' and incomplete ie. very bare TV room and no cooking equipment in the kitchen.

As others have mentioned, it's one of the more expensive camp grounds but understandable given its close proximity to town.
We didn't use much of the facilities but they seemed clean, the herb garden was a nice touch. The sites are relatively small and cramped together though. Fine when we were there but I imagine it wouldn't be the best experience when this place is full

We stayed here 1 night in Sep, outside their regular open season.
Most of the campground and the showers were closed. But the toilets were tidy and there were hardly any other campers around, a very nice quiet spot. There are some nice river walks nearby and great star gazing
South Island ▷ Canterbury ▷ Banks Peninsula ▷
4.5/5
Large campground in a quiet, scenic location.
The facilities were a bit old but clean and spacious. WiFi didn't reach our campsite but that's hardly a big concern when you have such lovely waterfront views to enjoy!

3.5/5
A nice holiday park but nothing special, clean facilities and big kitchen area.
The location is just off the main road but not close to anything. The service was basically non-existent: no one at reception on arrival or the next morning, I was in txt contact with someone (the owner?) who didn't seem to want to show up and collect our money. There was some miscommunication between the staff and someone else eventually came but they were not very friendly either.

The description for this place needs updating.
Since the new owners took over a few years ago, the springs has become a bit of a resort with camp sites, lodges and cabins. We thought it was an awesome hidden gem. The hot pools are not huge but it was spacious enough when we were there and the scenery is very beautiful. There's also great saunas and a cold plunge pool. The restaurant was great too.

A great camp ground with fantastic, newish facilities, big kitchen, free wifi and onsite cafe.
Close to the beach and walkways and a short drive into Nelson as well as Richmond and Mapua. Great place to base yourself while visiting the Nelson region

Great little campground in a good location, relatively close to city centre.
The facilities were nice and clean and staff were friendly.

A fantastic campsite near beautiful Lake Rotoiti, we were very impressed with the cooking and paid hot shower facilities (didn't expect it at a DOC site).
There are lots of sites spaced out and it was nearly empty when we were there, so quiet and peaceful. Great spot for nature walks - we spotted lots of birds and even a pair of wild deer

A huge holiday park, great location right by the lake (but nowhere near as busy as Wanaka town).
Excellent facilities but you had to pay for the hot showers.

We stayed 1 night and didn't use much of the facilities or meet the staff.
The kitchen was clean and tidy and non-powered sites were very quiet and spacious (ours was the only van in our area)

Stayed 1 night, arrived late in the evening so didn't spend much time here.
But contact with staff was easy and they left info for us at the door. Site was spacious and facilities were basic but clean and tidy.
