Campervan/Motorhome renters beware!
Like many New Zealanders we rented a couple of motorhomes for the school holidays. We booked our Motorhomes from Euro Campers, right here in Rolleston. Supporting local, tick!
We flew to Auckland and collected our two dirty, smelly, leaky motorhomes. One didn’t even have hot water for the duration. The bed linen and towels smelt far from clean and the overall cleanliness was not up to our standards, especially in the current climate. The camp chairs provided in one motor home were soaking wet and going mouldy. We even discovered on the last night that both campers rego stickers were long out of date.
Mid way through our 10 day holiday we visited Rainbows End. Parked in the carpark and triple checked everything was locked. When we returned at the end of the day we found both campers had been ransacked and burgled. They’d taken all four children’s iPads and headphones, a camera, clothing, shoes, make up, a speaker, hairdryer, jackets, backpacks and even a kids pencil case. Luckily our home contents insurance will cover most of our personal belongings.
The main issue is that the thieves took a TV and bracket from my friend’s motorhome. As these belong to Euro Campers, we are not insured for these items. Despite purchasing the extra “No Worries” insurance from Euro Campers and the theft being no fault of our own. Euro Campers billed us $855. They charged us $499 for the TV and $150 for the bracket. The remainder was for admin and labour costs!
While at the depot there was a couple there that despite having also taken the extra insurance, were being charged around $2000 for roof damage due to a branch that had fallen on them.
The staff member also advised me that had there been a fire for example, we would have been liable for all of the contents, as their insurance only covers the motorhome!
Both families have decided that we wouldn’t ever hire a camper or motorhome again, it simply isn’t worth the risk.
