Guessing this place can get a bit crowded in the summer but we stayed in May, pulled up at 3 and had an AMAZING view of the sound.
One of the best views we have had at a DOC campsite.
Take a walk along the track connected to the site.

Good site right on the beach.
Campsites don’t have a direct view but the beach is a 23 second walk. Facilities are a dated but very clean. Staff was amazing.
Had dinner in Takaka at Roots and lunch the next day at the Mussel Inn. Recommend both.

Probably the nicest campsite we have stayed at in New Zealand and set the standard for what we expect from campsites now.
Andrea and Gavin are some of the best hosts we had. Facilities are clean and were redone a few years back. And the views! Nothing like it at other campsites in New Zealand.
We spent some time there so some recommendations:
* Tramping - make sure you do Mt. John Observatory Track. Maybe the most underrated hike in New Zealand.
* Photography - Star shots at the Church of the Good Shepherd
* Random - 2 frisbee golf courses across the lake
* Food - Lamb burger at Blue Lake
