This is an excellent campground.
The bush and river surrounds would be very hard to beat and the facilities are modern and clean. The staff were friendly The nearby Trounson Kauri Park walk is reminiscent of Jurassic Park and totally not to be missed.

This is a large camp with older but very well maintained facilities.
There are well established trees and hedges separating sites and 5 thermal pools to choose from.
reasonably priced plus a shop.

This is an" East Coast" experience.
The facilities are adequate, there is a shop and trees for shade. There is a walk to a great beach. The camp is located by itself with no neighbors within a kilometer or so.

DOC camp.
it is a significant 25Km drive in on non sealed road from Kawarau.this is a magical place; a crystal clear lake and a great bush walk down the river to the Tarawera falls.
The camp is large with composting toilets. No other facilities.

Immaculate is the only word for the facilities.
They literally sparkle. There are a number of houses, a 4 bedroom backpackers above the facilities and camping/powered sites The beach is across some sand dunes and a dense shelter belt provides protection from the onshore winds. Everything about this place is great.

This place is largely about its location high in the hills above the Kaipara, with panoramic views of valleys and hills.
There is a modern backpackers lodge plus about 4-6 campsites. The facilities for the campers are separate to the lodge and old but clean. The hosts are great and offer a menu of cooked meals if desired. Totally different to the usual commercial camping grounds.

I have only used this camp in off peak times but found it to be excellent.
It does have a noisy road next to it and there is noise from ship loading but to balance that it is an easy walk to town shops and the beach is next door. I have found the facilities to be very clean and also the largest of any camp I have been to (heaps of showers and toilets) prices are reasonable.
Hi Mike3,
So glad you enjoy all the visits you have with us!
It is indeed very handy to be so close to town and have the beach on our doorstop.
The Ship loading and road noise also bothers us and we are working on reducing the noise throughout the year.
Our cleaning crew here work very hard so it is lovely to have positive feedback!
Hope to have you stay again soon.

This is a great place.
There is a brand new kitchen block and hopefully the ablutions block will also get a rebuild soon.
The grounds back onto an estuary and a 10 minute walk through the dunes takes you to the ocean beach. Staff are very friendly and the prices very reasonable. In February midweek it was almost empty.

This is a beautiful spot.
It is a basic DOC capsite with a composting toilet and river water. There is a large grass area to camp on surrounded by bush and with an unspoilt clear river running past. The river comes out of the Puketi Forest has 10 Km of walking track beside it upstream of the campsite. The site is free. DOC does need to give the toilet an upgrade.

The old Radiata Pine trees may have gone but thousands of native trees have been planted in their place which will be far better when they grow.
The row of toilets are new and nicer than the older facilities at the other end of the lake. The lakes are sand dune lakes with clear water and a thriving trout population. The grassy camping area is varied and quite attractive. There is also a walk to the West Coast starting just up the road.

The location is pure magic, but the facilities are very basic.
