We checked in with the owners daughter who we think was too young to be left in charge because she was unable to give us relevant information.
Eg where to fill our water tank, how to get to the beach. A storm had heaped up sand so the river was backed up making it difficult to get to the beach.
The site facilities were great and very clean. The owner was extremely helpful when we had major problems with our camper van letting me use his phone to seek help. Also he helped us to temporarily repair the van so we could take it to a garage for a permanent repair. We were impressed with his attitude and skills.

Very busy only one space available and several others looking for space after we arrived.
Stunning views from lookout. Right next to main road. Drop toilet incredibly smelly. Very friendly crowd some of whom we shared together the woes of our vans. Left as it was too busy for us.

Site is on the left heading from Rotorua.
Is signed as a rest area. On a small gravel road that has little traffic and is very quiet at night. As others have mentioned there is a river running around two sides of the site. There is a picnic bench and a toilet that was reasonable. Due to the drought the water tank was empty. There were horses there when we arrived in the twilight but they had gone in the morning but had left some droppings. There was quite a lot of animal poo on the site as there are free roaming animals. Despite this we enjoyed our stay. About 4 cars drove along the road early in the morning before we got up.
