We were lucky enough time get the only available spot at 11am.
As others have said, there's only 3 spots and it's right on a very popular/beautiful beach. So showing up early is a necessity.
Max 2 night stay. Bathrooms and cold shower close by. Dog friendly area. 1km walk to their town centre. We had a fantastic stay here

Nice little beach front area on Ohope beach.
Space for 6-10 campers/vans depending on the size and how nicely people park. Playground close by, 4 flush toilets (2 handicapped accessible stalls), dump station and fresh water. Showers on the beach front to rinse off at. Would definitely recommend if you're in the area.
Super popular area so get there early, if you show up at 4pm, you'll likely be out of luck.

First Freedom Camping spot we stayed at and we were SO happy.
Absolutely lovely bay with rock sand beach. Secluded area, so way less people. Enough room for 5 vans in the area. Basic toilets present, no other amenities. Would definitely recommend as this site was so beautiful and peaceful. Get there before 3 or 4pm if you're hoping to get a spot

After staying in many free, DOC and family owned sites, this was our first top 10.
While everything is immaculately taken care of and facilities were very clean, it was also kind of disappointing. Need a swipe card to get into everything. Doors to kitchen, fridge, freezer, bathrooms, etc. Kitchen had stove and hot plate, but had to bring all your own pots, pans, plates, etc. Tennis courts on site, really cool play area and a swimming pool. Plenty of bathrooms and showers. Camping sites were pretty small. Got 500mb wifi/day. For a childless couple who was just there to shower and sleep, the price didn't seem worth it.

Parking lot with a section for campers.
Quick walk over a hill to a stunning beach. Area for parking can fit at least 6 vans, we ended up with quite a few more. Basic bathrooms across the lot.

Adorable little town off the beaten track.
In the midst of farm land, near a school with a playground. Great little covered sitting area. Right next to the road, but not a very busy place so we hardly heard anyone. 2 flush toilets, lights on at night. Lots of mountain biking trails in the area. Got to see a bunch of Wera birds who were fun to watch. Kiwis in the area. Apparently there is a friendly boar in the farm next to the site, but we didn't see him. Lovely little site

Lovely spot on a Sandy Beach, popular with locals.
Views of the Mahia Peninsula. We were able to park on the sand facing the beach and right near the bathrooms. Change rooms also available. Drinking water on site. Huge lot that could easily fit 20 campers. A bit windy and the bugs were bad at night. Beware, lots of people were getting their vehicles stuck in the sand and needed to be pushed or towed out. Pick your spot wisely

Parking lot behind the tavern.
Checked with the bartender before we parked. Back is a lovely family home. They were very friendly. Toilets available during tavern hours, otherwise no amenities. Nice quite stay. Had a visit with the horses at the fence. Food at the tavern was affordable and delicious. Popular local spot

Free section big enough for 4 vehicles, we managed to get a flat spot but apparently some are sloped.
Right near the water, rocky beach. Picnic tables on beach. Playground close by. Toilets and fresh water available. Street was busy during the day as the boat launch is very close. Quieter in the evening.

Great site.
Big kitchen, sinks, fridge/freezer on site toilets and cold showers. Is a DOC campsite, so pay on honor system, was $20/person in an unpowered site, which seemed a bit expensive. Powdered sites available. Close to a great walk through the forest. Looked for kiwis, no luck for us but others did. Glow worms all over. Nice site overall

Great little camp site facing the waterfalls.
All staff super friendly and helpful. Unlimited wifi. Toilets and showers were clean. Warning: shower temperature changes quickly depending on water use. Laundry available on site for $4/wash. Kayaks available to rent for $10. Beach was okay, water isn't the cleanest, but not the campsites fault. Great experience, would stay again
