A seemingly undiscovered wee stop over.
There’s 24 hour flush toilets (x2), a covered picnicking area, a playground, enormous recycling bins, and a great big parking area in a lot behind the main set of shops in town. The lot is tidy and well lit, although empty. No dump station, but if you’re looking for somewhere near Gore, and Lumsden is too far, you could do a lot worse than this little gem.

Lumsden has to be the most welcoming town in the whole of New Zealand for freedom campers.
45 camping spots for _any_ overnight vehicle (yes, you’re welcome to sleep in a non SCC vehicle), plus dozens more specifically for self contained campers. They have grassy areas if you want to tent, picnic tables, covered sections, wash stations, 24 hour toilet blocks, and even playgrounds for the kids. If you’re travelling between Milford Sound and Queenstown and you don’t stop here, you’re missing out. Please, please, please treat the space kindly so the kind people of Lumsden don’t regret their kindness.
