Convenient spot for getting the ferry and exploring Wellington.
Our campervan was quite large and it was a bit of a squeeze getting into a spot. There are quite a few spots but these were almost full when we got there at 3pm, so get there early. Toilets are locked overnight. Unfortunately when we stayed it was really stormy weather so we didn't have a pleasant experience, but it is a convenient spot to freedom camp. Not too much noise from airport.

Gravel lot beside the river.
Nice clean toilets on site which were not locked overnight. Also a dump station and drinking water supply which was handy. 20 minute walk into town. Overall a pretty decent spot for freedom camping!

Beautiful location, the lookout is quite stunning at sunset.
The toilet is dire so we didn't use that. The lot seems to be on a slope which was a bit annoying. It wasnt busy at the time we visited (we were the only ones there!). Note the sign says to vacate by 9am.

We stayed on a powered site with our campervan, but this was in a separate area to the main campsite and had no facilities other than a toilet and shower which were quite open so were absolutely freezing
. Didn't feel like a paid-for campsite apart from having power, we stayed in better areas when freedom camping. Quite disappointed overall. But close to nice walks and impressive scenery

Really good free camping spot.
Lots of parking bays which were nearly full so we were lucky to get a spot. On the water which was really lovely. Toilets very basic (and had no light), also had sink and cold shower. Great base to explore able tasman from, and short walk to the skydiving centre if that's what you're there for!

A bit more pricey than other campsites we stayed at, but really good facilities so it was welcomed.
Nice clean toilets and showers, laundry and kitchen, and even hot tub on site. Walking distance to all the main kaikoura activities, definitely recommend a whale watching tour!

There are signs saying no camping but that refers to the picnic area, the freedom camping spot is near the workshop.
Lots of walks in the nearby forest/woodland. Clean toilets which have a light. Great spot for star gazing on a clear night!

Situated in a car park just outside the polynesian spa in the government gardens.
Quite a few spots but these filled up early afternoon, even in winter so get there early. There are toilets a couple of minutes away but these were locked overnight. Easy access into the town centre. There is a fountain in the gardens but it's not too loud and there is a wiff of sulphur!

Situated in the carpark of a sports centre/park on the water.
There are toilets which are locked overnight. Only 3 spots, 2 in the actual car park and 1 further down closer to the water. These are all clearly marked. Overall convenient overnight spot
