We arrived in Hokitika late afternoon and wanted to stay in the area to do the Gorge walk the next day.
We found Lake Kaniere and loved how much space there was! There is no camping on the foreshore but where you can camp there are bins and tables. In the morning we drove our camper down to the foreshore to have breakfast. The mist on the lake and the snow capped mountains made for a wonderful backdrop. Some friendly ducks there as well.

We have stayed here twice now during our two week camper van trip around the South Island.
It’s a top spot for a free night’s sleep. Very close to Twizel with all amenities you need so as long as you’re self-contained you’re all set! We loved waking up to the turquoise blue lake set amongst the autumn trees and there is so much space even having a dozen others staying there, there is more than enough room to have your own area. Definitely recommend.

This is a gorgeous spot!
We stopped here for a break along Arthur’s Pass on the way to Hokitika and Franz Josef, and were astounded by the beauty. So when we couldn’t get through Haast because of the broken bridge we decided to sleep here on the way back through! Even with other campers it was quiet and wasn’t hard to use the toilet. Would stay again.
