Nice position close to beach.but rather a lot of permanent vans on the site.
Thank you for taking time to review us. All customer feedback is important to us so that we can improve your holiday experience with us. We are glad that you mentioned our close location to the beach; our campground is often a destination for both domestic and overseas guests. Because we are located only 30 kms from Christchurch and have 193 campsites located less than 200 meters from the beach, we have high demand for on-site parking agreements by Kiwis who love to spend weekends at the beach. At present we have chosen a limit of 60 sites that are subject to on-site parking agreements, leaving 133 campsites available for casual campers. Some stay only one night; while others spend their whole annual leave here. We do not permit campsites to be used as a primary residence, with the exception of one staff member who lives on site. As we are a traditional Kiwi coastal campground, the majority of our guests are repeat customers who for years have enjoyed the privilege of setting up their campsites a few days before their camping holiday begins, so at times it may appear that there are more "permanent" vans than is actually the case.

It was fine for an overnight stop close to Auckland.

We loved this site and stayed 2 nights.
The view from our pitch was spectacular and there was a pathway to town - 10 minutes there, 30 minutes back. It was well laid out and clean and tidy.

We are in our late 60s and enjoyed this walk very much.
Some parts were challenging but the track was well maintained. It was quite busy however.

Clean and tidy site and very convenient for the town.
Attractive town and don't miss the 1066/big jumper shop for those who like logic puzzles.
Thank you Mike for your review. Unfortunately the 1066/big jumper shop has now disappeared, and the jumper is only viewable at Kiwi Country in town. We hope you choose to stay with us again in the future.

We had a fantastic beach view site and it was only $44.
The site was quiet but all wash room facilities were open. We liked the location and enjoyed the walk along to Cathedral Cove.

The Wilderness staff were all extremely helpful and went out of their way to rectify any problems we had.
They had been highly recommended by a friend and maybe our expectations were too high because we were disappointed with our first vehicle. It looked ‘tired’ and after 2 sleepless nights with an extremely noisy fridge and 2 noisy days of rattling doors whilst driving, we requested a change of vehicle. John at Wilderness immediately agreed to this and our second vehicle was a great improvement. However, another visit to Auckland did cause some inconvenience to our itinerary and really wasted a day of our holiday.
Therefore our main criticism is that we feel the van should have been checked more thoroughly before it was rented out. Another problem was that 2 of the pillows were mouldy and we wouldn’t use them. Also the bedding smelt musty (maybe we were the first of the season to use the van) and needed laundering straight away. These things should have been noticed. Our replacement van had a faulty TV, which didn’t bother us unduly but could easily have been checked beforehand. We were assured that in future there would be changes to the procedure.
We did however think that the vans were well equipped and the heater was really appreciated in the evenings. It also drove extremely well. The fuel tank was large and fuel consumption was good. The barbecue was also very useful.
Despite these niggles it was certainly the holiday of a lifetime for us and New Zealand is an amazing country. I hope we will be back to see more of it some time.

We had a lovely view of the lake and the site is very tranquil..
The ladies facilities were being updated and so there was a 'portacabin' for showers but these were excellent. Make sure you have food with you as we found the local shop had a poor choice.
Thank you for your lovely comments. Just to let you know that the Hotel and Sailz have fantastic meals and definitely worth a try. Our tribal reward members get 10% off from the Hotel so next time have a night off the cooking. Regards Sarah

We were the only motorhome there in November and had the exclusive use of the wonderful bathroom facilities - individual rooos with shower, toilet and wash basin.
The best we found on our whole holiday. The position was quiet above an attractive river and the staff were extremely helpful and gave us good advice on routes, attractions, etc. Thoroughly recommended.
