A beautiful location with tidy but basic facilities (it is a DOC campsite, after all).
No cooking facilities and only cold showers unless you pay for hot. The hosts were lovely and friendly and let us in even though we arrived 15 minutes past office closing hours (at 8:15pm). It was fairly busy for the tail-end of the high season and I expect it is probably packed over summer. A good stopping point halfway between Auckland and the Far North.

Excellent location, new facilities, great value campground.
I imagine it's packed over Christmas but when we went it was quiet enough that we didn't feel crowded. Right next to the beach. An easy drive to the airport and the city.

The campground is generally tidy and in a quiet spot right on the water.
However, the facilities are quite run down and showers are not free. We stayed in much nicer campgrounds for the same price. There were some long-term guests having a party the night we were there, and while the owners did attempt to quiet them down at our request (for which we are grateful), the guests didn't quieten down and kept yelling quite abusive language. They were even playing bagpipes at one point! The owners were friendly and helpful but the campground is very overpriced for what you get.

A groovy campground in a surf town at the south end of Ninety Mile Beach.
The facilities were clean and tidy, with an excellent lodge area for relaxing in. It doubles as a YHA, so there's beautiful murals everywhere - even the toilet block is decorated! The showers are free and unmetered. A short walk to the beach.

A tidy little campground in a sleepy little beachside location, close to the world famous Mangonui fish and chip shop and right next to the beach.
The owners were friendly and welcoming and the amenities were in excellent condition and very clean. Showers are free and unmetered. There is apparently a rec room of some kind but it was locked up while we were there.
