We stayed here and Beach Motor Camp.
This site is *much* nicer and 14 dollars less for a powered site. Free BBQ, showers 50c, really nice kitchen facilities with thoughtfully laid out seating area. Nice park for kids too. Probably the cheapest we've paid so far.
Beach Motor was expensive, and everything was still extra (not happy)
Hi Matt, Thank you very much for commenting, we appreciate your time. We are gradually upgrading the facilities and really glad you like the new kitchen/BBQ area and yes, it is good to have places to sit and relax in all weathers. Happy travels.

Nice enough site by the beach.
However, paid 70 dollars for a pitch before finding out the showers are extra, the bbq is extra, couldn't log into WiFi but that's probably a moot point because you only get 100MB of data before that too costs extra.
The site is fine, but the penny pinching set-up immediately left a sour taste in the mouth and I wish we'd tried the place up the road.

Awesome spot right by the sea, amazing stars at night and sunrise in the morning.
Plenty of room to find your own bit of space, think there were six vans in total. Bit of noise from passing traffic and train but nothing to spoil the setting.
No facilities, but that means it's not inundated with pretend-self-contained MPVs so this is a positive!
Probably our favourite spot in NZ so far.
Pay 10 dollars at The Store.

Car park in centre of town.
Very busy with MPVs with mattresses in the back. Quiet evening, despite being busy.
Managed to get a spot around 10pm, but only as someone kindly moved their van across one space so we had a double spot to reverse into - it's not great for larger vehicles being a car park designed for cars.
Have to be away by 7am, there was a security guy knocking in windows of people still asleep.
Overall a functional place to stay.

Fine for a stopover to better places, given the lack of local alternatives.
Site currently gravel, next to some building works. Was initially concerned as seemed to attract the local uni-brows for a spot of early evening powersliding and urinating one metre away from our van. But, actually turned out to be a quiet night in the end. Didn't feel especially relaxed at any point, we moved on first thing and had breakfast at Paihia.
