Lovely campsite on our way up the island.
Lots of shaded areas, hot showers, good kitchen area. The WiFi is expensive, and due to a communication fault we had to move our tent after setting up, but no worries. It’s a well priced campsite - 15 dollars each for non powered site.

Beautiful !!
I was a bit ill at the time so I found the walk up hill quite hard, but it didn’t take very long and was totally worth it. Stunning. We walked into the bush a bit past the immediate beach to find our own private area. There’s a toilet up there too. I can imagine it could get a bit cramped if you went at a peak hour as there’s not loads of space for people to be there. But so lush for a short walk

A lovely easy walk with stunning scenery but wow does it get busy!!
There’s a toilet on the path. Big beautiful bridges and immediate mountain views. Lovely! But You must start it before 10am to avoid the mega busy crowds. We started at 10am and it was busy but tolerable. On our return watching the masses walk past us was crazy. There’s no shade either so bring a hat.

An absolutely lovely random find.
Friendly owners with cute little huts that are super cheap. We went with the intention of camping but found the huts as affordable as putting up a tent in a big holiday park. Private parking, big cooking area with all equipment and amenities needed. Great pub food at really affordable prices - the take away menu especially. There wasn’t the best of space for tents but if in a van or taking a hut it’s great.

It’s lovely at the top but it’s almost entirely covered by trees, which is fine but after doing a few walks here I would like a bit of a view ...
we started at the DOC campsite and it took 6 hours of back country bush bashing and dodgy hops and balances with no view to reach the sugar loaf pass. We followed a crystal clear river almost right to the top which was nice. We camped up the pass - not many hard spots but we found one - make sure to double triple check the weather first. It’s lovely and beautiful and silent! But I imagine the weather can be harsh - we woke to ice on our tent. Most people camp at theatre flat I think. Super quiet walk, only saw two people in the morning. The walk down was lovely, to the routeburn car park. Just a two hour amble down an easier track with luscious mossy green atmosphere and a beautiful river water fall spot. If it weren’t for the really difficult 6 hour beginning I’d recommend it - maybe start at the other end and walk to sugar loaf then theatre flat. We didn’t go to theatre flat because we were fed up of the path!

I would give this place 10/10 but you have to pay for the showers which is a shame.
Everything else is amazing. So much to do for kids but if you are a quiet couple like us there are many lovely shady corners to pitch up at not be disturbed. Very clean facilities, loads of space, loads to do. Great accidental find on a tiring road journey. Thanks :)
Thank you for your review and you are right, it is a shame you have to pay for showers, but that's just how it is! There is no way to stop guests and non-guests having ridiculously long showers and using up all the hot water unless they have to pay for it.
