Beautiful spot - we were the only people there for an hour whilst I cooked supper and we settled in for the night.

That all changed when a chap on a dirt bike and 2 cars full of lads arrived - felt unsafe - so bailed 10 minutes up the road to the centre of Waverley - the nearest available Freedom Camping spot - shame 😔

Great spot, stunning beach and magical sunset !

Allowed for 3 campervans if you read the sign but we were 5. Toilets are too far and a bit dirty.

Really nice spot directly at the ocean, wonderful view!

We were lucky to have good weather with a beautiful sunset while low tide so the caves were all orange and we were alone at the place. Little walk to the toilets, men’s toilet was ok but smelled a bit, women’s toilet was clean. Maybe our favorite freedom camping ground so far, but depends on the weather a lot!

    Absolutely breathtaking.

We went down towards the cliff and a bit north and parked on the ridge. The sunset couldn’t be more beautiful. Not too crowded. There are powdered and formal campsites, but we parked along cliff to get privacy and we’re self contained. Worth the stop and glad we overnighted here - one of our favorite spots of the whole trip. Grabbed bottle of wine and walked to cliff and sat there for sunset all alone even just days after new years.

Next day we stopped at the formal area that has a nice big kitchen, a ping pong table, seating, and then a kids park out back. Bathrooms were clean (only used toilets) and well maintained. If you need facilities, seem nice enough. Again, we were self contained.

Signs identify that you have to pay (I think $17 or so) to stay in the designated area. We donated money regardless as it was one of our favorite spots.

Shared this spot with one other camper on a Wednesday in April.

Lovely spot with toilet + shower just a quick walk away. Epic sunset and sunrise here and it was amazing to fall asleep to the sound of the ocean. Two options for CSC campers — one a grassy area with room for 3 and the other a gravel lot closer to the beach with room for 3 (per council regulations). Someone from council showed up in the evening to hand out pamphlet on freedom camping in South Taranaki as well as check certifications. Highly recommend!!

Beautiful spot with spectacular view on the ocean, and a good sunset with a bit of luck.

Black sandy beach at just 50 meters. Clean toilets (with paper and soap) and cold shower.

    Beautiful campsite.

Max 3 campervans. Toilets are clean and a 3 min walk. Cold shower present.

Magnificent spot to wake up to.

Volcanic black sand, piles of ageing driftwood, the thunder of waves breaking on grey stone formations and the early morning light reflections are spectacular. It’s a freedom camp with clean toilets. Didn’t need to have a cold shower had a warm one in our motorhome. Definitely worth the 10 minute drive off the main road if your looking for a freedom camp that’s not in a council car park.

A very nice spot on the coast with stunning views.

Short walk to the bathrooms. Beautiful sunsets and not bad for a cheeky surf on a good day.

I was so pleased when we arrived to finally reach our destination and it was everything we had read on the reviews!

Beautiful black sandy cliffs, amazing views, peaceful location. We didnt have time to explore the caves so it's on our list for next time!

    Great view.

Toilets and showers available over the nearby Hill. Easy access to the black sand beach. Nice and quiet. Would stay again if in the area

Beautiful spot right on the cliff overlooking a beautiful black sand beach.

One spot for 4 cars but if that is full carry on along the cliff about 100m and there is space for 4 more. There was only one other van when we were there and it was one our favourite freedom camping spots we stayed at suring our month in NZ. Toilets and a cold shower close by. 10 star rating for the beautiful view, perfect for sunsets.

    Amazing site!

By far our favourite freedom camping site. Beautiful spot right next to the beach with caves to explore. 3 areas with parking meant for 3 campers but leniency for more campers at times! It wasn’t full when we were there but the ranger came by to say hi and said at times it gets full with over 10 campers in a spot!

Clean flush toilets and private cold showers minutes walk away. A camping spot you just shouldn’t miss experiencing!
