Note from Rankers;
We consider this to be the easiest access Campervan parking area in Wellington. There's also a very good free option around the corner at Evans Bay, but it requires transport to get into town, while this location is right next to Te Papa Museum (which by rights should cost more than the $30 it costs you to park here for 24hrs anyway).
It's also handy to the magnificent Wellington waterfront area which is well worth a stroll, plus all the great food and drink options within a short walk.
This is also the closest Campervan location to the Ferry Terminals.
Drive through into Barnett Carpark entrance and once you're in the carpark area, take a hard right back toward the main street again. You'll see around 10-15 specialty parks available, near the street you accessed the carpark from. See photo which shows the parking area.
Purchase a parking ticket for $30 for a 24 hour period.
Toilets are located a either in Te Papa Museum or walk for a few hundred metres the other way, past the skate park, next to a simple / fun little playground (also very handy if you have kids :)
Other note:
No overnight parking here on Saturdays due to restrictions for the food market which opens first thing on Sunday morning.
Park Rangers monitor sites and recreational carparks seven days a week including public holidays. If you breach the Bylaw you could receive a fine.

Not bad site quieter than expected for middle of town next to museum Useful for catching free to South Island Note most local toilets don’t open before 07:00 am

Good place as it’s directly in the city and nearby all things you want to do in Wellington.
Unfortunately it was VERY WINDY when we stayed there and the whole camper (7,5m) was shaking at night, even though there where some big campers around us.
It would be nice if there where toilets around at this price range.

There are only 8-10 designated motorhome spots but there were 25+ motorhomed parked up without any issue.
No spaces when we first rocked up but we tried a few times and came up lucky. It’s a basic car park so you’re coming for the location and we got cosy in our RV for a one night stay. Right near the museum, close to the ferry, and a quick walk to Cuba Street. Our mark reflects the convenience of the location before or after a ferry / proximity to downtown Wellington.
Noise and passing traffic was not an issue for us. Things had quietened down by 11:30 and got started around 6am. Park further from the road if you can’t do noise or take ear plugs. Wind is a bigger issue if you’re further away but is no bother in a hefty vehicle.

A little confusing because there are 5ish large yellow marked spots for motor homes, but there were loads of other campers in the lot.
We assumed those spots were for massive motorhomes and we could just park anywhere, but you had to use the pay station in the middle of the motorhome section to purchase a 24 hour pass. It’s $30 which is a steal for Wellington parking, and walkable to TSB and Cuba street. No toilets though, we read the other reviews and planned on going elsewhere before returning to the van for the night. Though I think there is a toilet in the petrol station down the street 24/7. Drinking water at the nearby skate park. Showers for $3 at the aquatic center a short drive away.

We stayed here for one night after getting off the ferry at 11pm.
Other reviews had said there were toilets nearby so we thought this place would be fine as our toilet wasn’t working, but when we came all of the nearby ones had closed overnight, with the exception of one 24 hour one which is right in the centre of all the bars and clubs and was in a really awful, almost unusable state by midnight. So I wouldn’t recommend this place if you are likely to need to use a toilet during the night, it really is (fully functioning!) self contained only.
Otherwise it was fine, not too much noise or anything given it’s proximity to the centre.

We ended up parking at the museum because we misunderstood the instructions.
The museum entrance is before the Barnett entrance. It's still okay to park there, but more expensive at 40 nz dollars per night. We still feel like we had a bargain, because the museum which is free to enter is definitely worth the parking fee and the proximity to the waterfront is priceless.

We almost didn’t come after seeing the previous review about height restrictions but decided to drive by to see.
We can confirm that there’s no height restriction here, you take the street next to the te papa museum and it’s on the right side of the road.
Quiet considering it’s so close to the city. Very windy though - to be expected I think.

Super central and well worth the $30/24hr fee.
Walk to Te Papa museum, walk to eateries Cuba Street and water front. We stayed on a Friday night and whilst a bit noisy early in the night, quietened down relatively quickly. Very easy and quick access to inter Island ferries.

Just a warning, this has a maximum height restriction of 2.2m.
We turned up with a campervan that was too tall and had to turn around (not the biggest / easiest space for it).

Cost 30$ for 24h.
It’s a basic parking lot offering nothing else than a place to park. Toilets are available across the park (5min walk and closed for maintenance at our time). You can find other public toilets downtown (~7min walk).
I would go back again because it’s very central, close to the downtown bars and restaurants and allow you to visit every part of central Wellington on foot.

Very central parking area.
You are directly at the harbor and quickly in the town center.
However we came with a 7m long camper. Parking lots were too small. We saw several of these sized campers blocking 2-3 lots. Arriving Saturday early afternoon it was quite difficult to find a free spot.
You can buy the following tickets: 30 Dollars for 24h or 14 Dollars for 12h. (Recommendation: Buy 2x 12h instead of 24h to save 2 Dollars if you like).

A large car park in the middle of wellington.
It is busy in the day but clears at night time and there is a toilet block on the other side of the park that’s next too it should you wish to use them. We originally wanted to stay at the free camping sites (all full) but found this to be a much better option in the end as it’s right in the centre of Wellington right next to Te Pata museum, harbour and central district with food and shopping. So glad we stayed here as you would need to drive in and pay for parking anyway. It’s $14 for 12 hours or $30 for 24hrs.

To bad hour camper got vandalised here some found it nessery to write on the back of hour camper 😖

It's a car park.
Right in the centre of Wellington, busy with shoppers during the day, but empties out in the evening. Only $14 for 12 hours if you are waiting for an early ferry.

Essentially just an open air car park.
Excellent location to walk to a whole lot of activities in Wellington, including right next to Te Papa museum. No designated motorhome spots so had to stick out of one of the spots. $30 for 24 hours. Public toilet 5 minutes walk across the park.
This was the oddest experience in our north island adventure - staying in a car park with traffic going by! Would probably stay here again given the location.
Did not see any security and the payments were done via machine.
