This was a perfect stop for me for location and price.

The kitchen had everything you could need, the bathrooms were dated but clean. The owner/managed was very friendly and helpful. There's nothing special about the place, but I wanted to make up for the 1* from the person with the overactive imagination.

Plus: Friendly receptionist, lots of space to pitch a tent.

    Kitchen is fully equipped.

Minus: Facilities are not very well maintained nor clean. Use the bathroom in block 7, the other block is pretty old and uncomfortable! Payed 19$ per person per night, which is overpricey. Atmosphere reminds me of a neglected ghost town.

    I arrived late, around 11p.

Within 20 seconds of being parked with the engine off, a man came over and asked me if I had paid yet - I said no, which I thought was obvious. Before I could even inquire about cost, he began a tirade. He accused me of trespassing and theft, began taking photos, and announced he was calling the police (all while I was flabbergasted and apologizing for upsetting him). Needless to say, I opted to leave instead of give this business my money (although he tried to block my exit, initially).

You are better off going to the nearby DOC park - my interactions in this town were largely unpleasant.

Maybe he had a really bad day, but it seems a poor excuse to act as such. It could be new management, but I can't help but assume the hostility was due to the fact that I arrived in a campervan.

Very unfortunate that the local marina banned Freedom Camping last month, as we had intended on making use of it.

Instead, we ended up here... From the beginning we probably should have kept going and tried something closer to Tongariro National Park, but we didn't... the owner/manager was lovely, but the park itself was from a horror movie! Lots of "construction", toilets and showers dirty and floor was like a pool after a shower, kitchen was very basic and overdue for some working appliances, found the laundry and thought Jack Nicholson's character from "The Shining" might pop his head in! I guarantee that all the "guests" stayed close to each other for "safety in numbers" and the only saving grace of our campsite was the view to the Turangi police station should we need to make a run for it... we made it out ok, but would recommend people stay well away from this campsite until it is "renovated", and stay out of Turangi in general as it wasn't a very nice town to visit in.
