Information

Twilight Campsite

Camp overlooking Twilight beach. Only accessible on foot and with minimal facilities, this is the spot for a true wilderness experience.

Twilight Campsite is only accessible by foot and is a perfect place for fishing, walking and relaxing.

The campsite forms part of the Te Paki Coastal Track.

Twilight Campsite is also part of Te Araroa Trail and is the first campsite walkers come to if starting at Cape Reinga/Te Rerenga Wairua.

The tracks to this campsite are best suited to people with good fitness. Although this is a coastal track, the track is not flat. The track is well formed or follows sections of beach with several long climbs up to ridges which go up and down over the undulations in the landscape.

Getting There:
From Kaitaia head north on SH1.
Follow signposts for Cape Reinga/Te Rerenga Wairua if accessing from the north OR
Alternatively, you can access the campsite from Scott's Point to the south via Te Paki Stream.

Notices

  • Eastern Te Paki track closures

All walking tracks east of State Highway 1 and Cape Reinga/Te Rerenga Wairua in the Te Paki Recreation Reserve are closed due to storm damage. The tracks to the west including the Lighthouse track are open.

Pandora campsite is closed. Tapotupotu, Kapowiarua (Spirits Bay) and Twilight campsites are open.

This is a long term alert.

Location is nice, and you can have a swim.

What's not so great are the aggressive food stealing possums. Make sure you don't leave any food outside, and even put your pack in the tent.

It’s a 3hr walk to the campsite from the carpark off the side of the road to the left, if you go straight it should be about 4-4.5hrs.

Check out topographical maps before you go! You can still walk along the beach when it’s high tide, but it’s a little bit harder to walk on the sand.

The sign says 2h to twilight beach, but its another 45m to walk to the campsite, a bit longer if you take breaks. The te paki coastal track itself is stunning both ways, you go through various terrains from dunes to swaps and bushlands, the beaches are super quiet and wild, not quite a swim-friendly beach but stunning nonetheless.

The campsite is basic with a couple long drops, a tap with unpotable rainwater, and a wee shelter for cooking

After a walk through sand dune country and a very different landscape than is usual for NZ, there's the long Twilight Beach and the remote Twilight Beach campsite.

It feels like the middle of no-where, but only a few hours from SH1. Magic.

    A beautiful place.

Toilets and water facility. Really quiet place because it is in the middle of nowhere!
