The start of the Pakihi Track - get ready for a superb cycling or hiking experience.
The Pakihi is one of the highlights of the Motu Trails Great Ride - part of the New Zealand Cycle Trail. On the Pakihi, you descend from 600m to about 100m altitude, through sensational forest. The lower half is right by the Pakihi Stream - it's beautiful. The riding is not technically difficult, however the track is graded 'advanced' because in places there are drop-offs to the side of the track. Care is required. You need to have warm clothing, it can get cold. After heavy rain the track may be affected, so ask at the Opotiki i-SITE for updates.
