The Milford walk was a magnificent walk.
The views where stunning, and the walk overall was very rewarding.
The trip was an experience I’m glad I had, with great 3 course food and pretty scenery at the lodges. However the one thing I would criticise is the track on the way down from the McKinnon pass. The track was rocky the whole way down, and throughout the track there were boulders that where slippery and really difficult to cross, however if you are a hiker or enjoy a challenge this day is for you.
Once in a lifetime experience, very well maintained.

Be aware that not all rooms are created equal.
We had bad rooms next to kitchen with no views (unlike all other walkers). Another nearest to generator, and a room so hot we had to sleep on floor. We had drunken noisey people on our trip who screeched so loud we got headaches.
At the next lodge we were closest to the generator and drying room. We were told we one of first to book. so were undervalued.
The other thing I missed about freedom hiking was the ability to do what you wanted when you wanted. The regimented meal times, hiking times etc was not our usual experience of hiking. And there is something immensely satisfying with cooking a simple meal over a cooker and enjoying it under the stars.

Great experience even though we only did the day hike.
The guide was awesome, explained all about the milford track and the lodges..explained all the plants and birds along the way. Includes lunch at Glad House. Will definatley come back with them to do the entire track. Top notch operation.

Expensive but well worth it - excellent guides, mostly very good food.
Good accommodation on track. Generally a very enjoyable experience with an able and complete company.

We did the full 5 day tramp.
We had reservations because of the cost, but you get what you pay for. It was a great experience. 4 excellent guides, nothing too much trouble, a very efficient operation. The size of the group was also a concern before we went (maximum 50 per group), but there is plenty of room on the track and we didn't feel as if we were hemmed in by people and we enjoyed the company in the evenings. The lodges and food were good - hot showers and drying rooms for clothes were very welcome. Be prepared for the worst weather. We didn't get the views from the top of the pass. If in doubt do it, you won't regret it. With the known dramatic and sudden weather changes some flexibility would help. For instance, being able to go straight onto the Milford Sound boat trip in the afternoon of the 4th day if the weather is good (we had great weather that day). By the next day the weather could have changed considerably, which it had for us and we had a cold, wet and misty boat ride.
