Information

Tasman Lookout Track

approx 600 m return | 30 minutes return

The Gap is the name given to a break in the rocks between Taitomo Island and the rock shelf on the mainland. When there is a sizeable swell, cataclysmic explosions of froth are forced through the narrow gap and provide an awe-inspiring spectacle. Other nearby crevices show the embryonic stages of the same feature. In time the cracks in the rock will be enlarged to form caverns, the roofs of which will collapse to form offshore stacks. From the lookout there are magnificent views all the way up Piha Beach.

Walking Track

Access

The start of the track is signposted from the southern end of Piha Beach. There is parking nearby.

Track

The wide, well-formed, even track is aided with steps as it climbs via a lookout to a bench above The Gap.
