Tasman's Great Taste Trail

Tasman's Great Taste Trail - formerly the Tasman Loop Cycle Trail - is a new cycleway and walkway in the Tasman region.

Easy-to-ride, with a gradient similar to the Otago Central Rail Trail, the trail caters for a wide range of cyclists and walkers. As stages of the trail are completed there will be the choice of day rides or a series of overnight stops.

When complete, the whole trail - including a section in the Motueka River Valley - will cover a distance of 162-175km and will run from Nelson Airport, to Richmond, out to Tapawera, along the Motueka River Valley to Riwaka, and then back to Richmond through Motueka and Mapua.

Reminder: Rabbit Island Logging in Progress

Visitors to Rabbit Island are asked to keep to the marked trails. Logging is in progress and heavy machinery and trucks are in constant use. Please use caution, particularly at intersections.

Mostly well organised route, occasionally sketchy signage.

The trail is still a bit rough in spots but it made for a great day excursion from Nelson to Mapua and back.

The trail was paved from Nelson to Richmond then gravel/dirt from Richmond to Mapua. The trail itself is well marked but there are not a ton of signs pointing to nearby wineries/galleries/etc- the only drawback. We managed to find the Te Mania Wines and the Hogland Glass Studio with some work. The bike ferry was fun and beer, smoked mussels, and ice cream were perfect mid-ride snacks!
