The 'Ride of the Rings' was a very good experience: after 1 hr 30 minutes riding in the Dart River Valley, an interesting 4WD tour on many sets of LOTR movies.
Funny comments and very friendly guide!

Huge, sweeping landscapes that you really could not see on foot.
Great horse tips and great humour when keeping us in the saddle.

Did two tours, first one was for total beginners!
I did not enjoy it (I am a horse instructor in Germany). Second tour was awesome, I was allowed to canter on m own apart from the group.

Exploring New Zealand's beautiful nature on a horse back was relaxing.
Breathing the fresh air and just enjoying the pureness of the country.

Went in one of their full day tours.
Did the Ride of the Rings and River Wild options. Ride of the Rings was mediocre at best. It starts out with a 4wd tour of some of the local filming locations for Lord of the Rings, the Hobbit and Wolverine. They don't stop for very long at each location and they don't bring you in to see the location close up, you can only stand at the roadside and see it from a distance. The tour ends off with a horse tour of the dart river area, which was nice with great scenery, but no relation to the lord of the Rings series as they imply on their website. They also state that the River wild has ties to lord of the Rings, but it doesn't. It's basically just a two hour version of the first horse tour. On the first tour the ride was nice and the horses well behaved, but on the second I was not impressed. One person from our group ended up in the dart river because the guides told us to cross the river in the wrong spot and I was almost thrown from my horse (who was skittish and behaved badly the whole 2 hours) at one point and incurred a hand injury as a result. The guides both seemed to try to ignore that it even happened and just moved on with the tour. Was not pleased and I would not recommend this tour to anyone who is looking for a Lord of the Rings tour, use Nomad Safaris instead.

I did two rides in one day.
I am an experienced rider. My first ride was along the Dart River up to Mt Albert with some river crossings. The second one was up at Paradise. Staff and horses are really good. Horses can be used for beginners as well.

Was not impressed with their rules about weighing people to make sure they are under 95 kilos.
It should be stated on their brochures that they do this. It's not good practice in my opinion.

I have not been riding that much, but they gave me a horse that could fit and took good care of me. It was so fun! And our guide, Linsey, was such a smiling and lovely girl.

The weather on the day was pretty awful and I was not kitted out for it.
It would have been a pretty wet and cold old day if it wasn't for the friendly welcoming ladies and gents at dart stables who leant me a woolly vest, hat gloves and waterproofs! thanks guys! the horse trek was really fun, It was my first time riding a horse and it went fine! Yogi (my horse) was really laidback and easy to get along with and our Guide was entertaining and really looked after us. The weather didn't matter in the end, I had great fun in amusing company!

Spectacular scenery and loved the water crossing on horseback.Would recommend this tour to anyone, even to people that have never ridden a horse before as the horses are matched to each rider based on their riding ability.

I did the Trilogy Loop.
The horses were great (Ginger is lovely!), the scenery is stunning and our guide was very friendly. It was probably my best horsetreck ever!
We were a small group of experienced riders (only 6, including the guide), which was perfect! We did a lot of river crossing and of cantering.
BUT...
They describe it as a 3 to 3,5 hour ride but we rode only 2,5 hours. And, last but not least, at the end of the ride, we had to hurry and jump into the van that took us back to Queenstown. Instead of dropping us at our hotels/hostels were they had picked us up the same morning, they dropped everyone in the center of Queenstown without telling us before. That was not nice at all. It felt a bit like "now we got your money, we don't care"... tsst tsst tsst.

Had a great day out.
Rode the Loop and Rings today. 3hour fast canter ride in the morning with a 1.5hour slow ride in the afternoon. Two different horses and two completely different rides. Got shown where scenes of Lord of the Rings was filmed and both tour guides were very knowledgeable!
