Whale Island Tours

4 hour guided tours in a pristine New Zealand wildlife sanctuary accessed only by boat

Whale Island, also known as Moutohora Island is situated 9 KMs off shore from Whakatane in the Bay of Plenty.
Totally predator and pest free, Whale Island now homes many rare and endangered species including Kiwi, Tuatara, Kakariki and saddleback.
Join us for a 4-5 hour tour and learn about the islands colourful history and restoration from our 23 years of close involvement.

The tour starts from our booking office where we make a special effort to ensure that no unwanted pests, insects or weed seeds have found there way into your clothing, footwear or bags.
A 100 meter walk to our boat followed by a 20 minute ride to the Island.
A 30-40 minute circumnavigation includes our Eco Tour and a run down of the geology and History of the Island.

A beach landing by inflatable boat followed by more Island history and a glade walk followed by a reasonably short climb to the saddle which offers breath taking views of the Pacific Ocean and White Island.
All the while rare New Zealand birds can be seen flying about.

From the saddle the trail then takes you to a site which once was home to Maori where remnants of horticulture and defensive battlements can be seen.

The tour then takes you back down and around to Sulphur Bay. A geothermal active bay with a hot water beach and great swimming.

On occasions and for those who are a bit fitter, a quick excursion can take place to McEwans Bay home of Whale island newly establishing New Zealand fur seal colony.
