Information

Te Ara Tirohanga (Remutaka Trig Track)

2 km return | 45 minutes return

The views do not give themselves away until you reach the crest of the ridge near the summit trig. Lake Wairarapa is minuscule in the immensity of the Wairarapa Plains, which extend from a hazy seaward conclusion at Palliser Bay to a northern horizon masked by haze.

Walking Track

Access

The start of the track is signposted 300 metres below the summit on the Hutt Valley side of the Remutaka Hill.

Track

The rocky, uneven and sometimes slippery track zigzags from around 520 metres altitude to the trig at 725 metres above sea level.

Geology

The Remutakas have been subjected to some of the most destructive earth movements of New Zealand’s tectonic legacy. The greywacke and sandstone blocks have been shattered, crushed and jointed, the debris tumbling down the steep slopes under the influence of gravity and water.

The 1855 earthquake raised the Rimutakas by around 2.5 metres and moved it 14 metres sideways. The mountain range is rootless, being squeezed up through the crust like a pip between two fingers.

The undulating and dissected spine of the Rimutaka Range is only broken by the telecommunications mast on Mount Climie. Otherwise it is a raw ridge, unblemished by man’s structures.

SH2 between Featherston and Upper Hutt.

Climb up to the trig at the top of Mount Rimutaka. We did not climb all the way as it was very windy, but got to the other side of the mountain - great views.
