Not keen on getting too wet but love abseiling?
Apart from a couple of waist-deep pools Blue Creek is a dry canyoning trip. This stunning Kahurangi canyon is deep and narrow as it was carved into a softer type of rock over many years. In some places you can touch both walls at the same time and if you look up you’ll only see a sliver of daylight. It really feels like you’re getting absorbed by the earth.
If you ask your guides nicely they might even try to keep your feet dry on this one. By the end of this trip, you’ll be an abseiling pro!

ABOUT THIS CANYON
From Courthouse Flat car park we take you on a short but sharp climb up the hill. After walking amongst beautiful native forest for about 1 hour you find yourself surrounded by steep marble cliffs. This is where Blue Creek starts with a few short warm-up abseils before it becomes really narrow. You’ll be immersed in this spectacular and peaceful environment for about 4 hours. By the end of this trip you’ll be an abseiling pro! The end of the canyon is indicated by the Blue Creek Resurgence where a beautiful crystal clear river simply starts from a hole in the ground. A short walk along the river brings us back to Courthouse Flat.
GETTING THERE
Blue Creek is located deep within the remote Kahurangi Park, at the foot of Mt Owen. To get there you can either come with us in the van (limited space available) or drive your own vehicle. Upon booking we’ll arrange a suitable meeting place depending on where you are staying so you can either jump in our van or follow the van to the canyon. The last 20km is a gravel road which is generally in a good condition, suitable for normal 2×4 vehicles, as long as they are not too low to the ground.
