Na Clachan Wine Tours Marlborough

Flexible, friendly Marlborough wine tour with a knowledgeable guide who shares your enthusiasm for wine

Join Na Clachan on a voyage of discovery around some of Marlborough's fantastic wineries. Immerse yourself in the fascinating stories of challenges, disappointments, successes and incredible personalities that have made this region world famous in the wine world.

Na Clachan grew grapes for 12 seasons for Allan Scott Family Estate so we pride ourselves on our knowledge of Marlborough wines from the roots to the glass.

Take a stroll through the vineyard as we explain how Marlborough's grapes are planted, pruned, managed and harvested. And of course sample a range of Marlborough's delicious wines. Sauvignon blanc may be the dominant force in this area but with over 15 grape varieties grown we have a wine to suit every palate.

With pick-up and drop-off at your Marlborough accommodation, comfortable air-conditioned vehicle and a flexible itinerary all you have to do is relax and enjoy the views, wines, fellow travellers and stories that make your day a feast for all your senses.

Choose from a full day tour (not for the faint hearted, this is the marathon of wine tours), half day with lunch or afternoon tour and leave the rest to the team at Na Clachan.

We were picked up and dropped off by the tour guide who took us to five vineyards.

They were all in beautiful locations and our tour guide, Helen, was excellent. Would recommend!

Enjoyed a splendid wine tasting tour and lunch with Helen and Chris of Na Clachan in Sep 2016.

Absolutely great time had by myself and fellow wine tourist (Andy). Thoroughly recommend Na Clachan to anyone who wants to book a similar wine tasting tour.

HISTORY: Na Clachan is Scots Gaelic meaning ‘the stones’ or a ‘meeting place’. Helen explained the name reflected the Na Clachan team’s desire to bring people together in a stony place (characteristic of Marlborough region's soils) to meet, taste and enjoy wine together.

LOGISTICS: Very straightforward. Na Clachan team picked up and dropped off myself and my fellow wine tourist at our camp-site doorsteps. Could not be more easy and convenient logistics wise.

WHAT TOUR COVERS: Very Comprehensive. My tour started with lunch and wine-tasting at the Allan Scott family winery (excellent opportunity to make sure your stomach is fully lined before wine tasting) then visit to a further 4 wineries selected by Helen. Lunch and tour lasted from 12 noon to 5 pm. You can choose which wineries to go to and Na Clachan team will plan into your tour. In my case I was happy to go with whatever Helen suggested.

FRIENDLINESS/KNOWLEDGE OF TEAM: Excellent. Most of my tour was with Helen. Helen combined knowledge, experience and fun in a perfect package. She helped me expand my wine-tasting descriptions from “yummy” and “deelish” to “spicy”, “lemon and limey” and even “flinty/minerally”. She also introduced me to the wonders of NZ’s Gerwurtraminers (total revelation - my new favourite wine). Honestly can't think of a better person to go wine-tasting with (note– I started the lunch part of tour with Chris who was also great – thanks Chris).

I had the most wonderful day out on the na clachan wine tour with Helen.

It wasn't at all commercial, very friendly, open and interesting experienced, tailor-made to fit what I wanted to see and do and I had ALL my questions on wine, history of the area, winemaking etc. answered and learned a great deal about the tradition of winemaking in the Marlborough area. More like a day out with a friend than a paid tour. Transport, guide, choice of vibnyards, lunch simplt EVERYTHING was top class - couldn't have been better. Very impressive service!

Helen was a great host who picked us from our hotel, took us to many interesting vineyards and gave us a lot of information about Marlborough wine.

And because we were interested in the organic side of things, she made sure we got to see many of organic winemakers.

Helen was very friendly and had a great breadth of knowledge that enhanced the experience.

She was good at tailoring the itinerary to the tastes and preferences of the group. We do recommend you keep some good notes as things can be a little confusing after 45 wines in a day. We have enjoyed all the wines we have bought back with us. Visiting a chocolate factory was a good end to the day.

    A great day out!

I'm not sure whether Andreas sees 5 wineries as too few. 5 wineries in 4 hours gives the opportunity to taste maybe 30 different wines which seems like a good representation of what Marlborough offers. My aim is to take time and enjoy a few wineries, explore their points of differences and understand a bit more about the growing of vines and production of wines, rather than to tick off as many wineries as possible.

Yes definitely more a white wine region than red - if you are interested in red the best I can do is visit wineries that will offer two red wines, usually pinot noir plus one other. That is a reflection of Marlborough's climate.

We weren't sure what to expect on a wine tour, but having done the Na Clachan tour with Helen we would totally recommend it.

Far from being just a chauffeur so you can get drunk on samples, Helen was very engaging (consciously remembering everyone's name, which was nice touch) and very knowledgable and would adapt her tour to suit people's preference or taste if possible. She made sure that everyone was getting the most out of the experience at each winery and was always on had to offer suggestions and tips about particular wines. In addition to that, Helen also grows her own grapes so had a great insight into different areas of the wine making process that she shared with us. Overall we had a great day and would recommend this tour 100%.

Helen is a very informative and knowledgeable guide and took us to a good mix of wineries on our afternoon tour.

She allowed us time to sample and to purchase without making it seem like we were being herded from one place to another. We particularly liked how she used her personal experience to demonstrate about how the vines are pruned for growth and productivity from one year to the next by taking us to a row of vines. We thoroughly recommend Na Clachan to anyone.

Helen also kept us entertained between tastings so that the day went really quickly. She explained about growing and farming the vines as well as giving background information about the industry. I now feel I could identify a gewurz from a reisling. A great way to select your wines - I recommend a visit early on in your holidays so that you have more chance to drink your favourites!
