Information

Lake Tarawera Outlet Campsite

Camp alongside the lake in a large and attractive campsite where trout fishing and water sports are popular. There is no road access to the campsite.

You need to get a $5 permit to access this campground (get one here - kawerauinfo@xtra.co.nz), but make the effort as the campsite and short walks to Tarawera Falls is well worth it. Note that access is via Kawerau and a 25km gravel road.

You need to look for Waterhouse Street and cross the bridge, take a left then a right and follow through.

Also permit can be obtained easier by heading to Kawerauonline and filling out application form online from a computer.

A great hidden little gem for those willing to endure the gravel road drive. Boaties paradise. Great family spot too.

The walk to Tarawera Falls from the Outlet is what we would describe as a medium fitness grade, we took young children with snacks and water and they survived (many others gave up crying) There is an amazing swimming hole approx 3/4 way through the track, so pack a towel as you don't want to miss this opportunity to have a dip or jump from the cliff into the deeper water on the far side of the river. There is a portion of track damaged so an alternative route has been carved into the side of the cliff - is a bit tricky to navigate if your not agile.

The trek back to the outlet is harder as most of the track is uphill. But well worth it.

Composting toilets are pretty well kept and well spread out through the campsite, and huts for a solar shower if you have one to hang.

    Thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

Another one of NZs epic places.

Right out of the way next to a crystal clear lake and aqua blue River. Very well maintained cooking area and toilets, the most well kept and non smelling composting toilets I've come across to date. Manager is a top bloke. Cheers DOC!

Fantastic lakeside location that also happens to be the starting point to one of my fav shortish walks in NZ.

The water is so clear and begs to be swum in. The outlet river has some fantastic swimming holes if you cross the bridge and walk up the valley. I love this place and the only downer was that the camp wasn't tidily managed (it was a quiet time of year, but neither toilet had any toilet paper and hadn't been been swept in a long time), but don't let this put you off. The long drive down the gravel road is well worth the effort.

DOC Tarawera Outlet – The unsealed road is good until the last bit, but still very manageable.

The site is picturesque. The location is right on the lake and has a very nice, not killer, walk to the falls that pop out of a hole in a wall of rock. Beautiful place.

    Campsite is great.

But it would be worth mentioning, that the access road from Kawerau closes after 7pm. We were not able to get to the camsite for the first night due to that.

    DOC camp.

it is a significant 25Km drive in on non sealed road from Kawarau.this is a magical place; a crystal clear lake and a great bush walk down the river to the Tarawera falls.

The camp is large with composting toilets. No other facilities.

Nice area, easy to access with campervan, however toilets were loaded with mosquitos, no air = no exit for them.
