Information

Port Jackson Campsite

At the northern tip of the Peninsula, this campsite is at the water’s edge next to the beach. At the eastern end of the campsite, the Muriwai Coastal Walk leads up the headland towards Wharekaiatua Pa and along the coast, with stunning coastal views.

Port Jackson Camping Ground is right at the northern tip of the Coromandel Peninsula right next to the beach. There are some old Maori sites nearby, some of which are wahi tapu (sacred sites). Protective dune work is being done in this area, so please obey those signs and fenced areas. An awesome place to explore the area and chill at the beach.

The best campsite of our 8 week trip.

An unspoilt long sandy bay, plenty of sites right on the edge of the beach with uninterrupted sea views. Friendly ducks (don’t feed them). Clean toilets, and (not too)cold showers. Very peaceful. The gravel road was in very good condition, narrow and some of the corners are tight, so don’t try it if you’re not a confident driver. It took us just under an hour.

Great location as you're right on the beach, perfect for that morning or evening to wake up or fall asleep to the sound of the ocean, beach showers - cold, and standard long drops so be prepared.

Drive up the coromandal coast is one to enjoy!

    Camp right on the beach.

Large campground stretched right along the coast. For $10 a night it’s great value. There were lots of toilets and cold showers. We got unlucky with weather but imagine this would be a great spot on a good day. Good if you’re looking for somewhere quiet to lounge on the beach.

Incredible spot right on the coast.

Heaps of space, incredible wildlife, basic toilets and cold showers. Doc never even came to check so wouldn’t bother booking online prior.

Spectacular views!! Facilities were good, toilet is a long drop and the showers are cold.

We made a booking and got there around 6pm however no one was there to check us in so we just made our way into the camp.

Plenty of spaces available to park and camp. Water at the beach was nice and clear. Lots of long drop toilets. No rubbish facilities anymore so be sure to take garbage bags.

    Would highly recommend this place!

We visited early spring and shared the campsite with one other van. We parked next to the outdoor showers (which were cold but nonetheless a fun bonus) and watched a pod of dolphins hunt in the bay as we ate dinner. A truly magical place!

    Wow! Great place to stay.

We visited for the first time last week and stayed 4 days. Beautiful safe swimming beach, we were lucky the water was very warm and had several swims. The clarity of the water is also amazing. Long sandy bay, good for swimming, fishing and other water activities.

Good choice of campsites either beachside or slightly further back. Plenty of shade in many parts of the camp. And generally most sites are reasonably flat.

Plenty of long drop toilets all the way along the campsite areas. Cold showers, with good pressure, plenty of these also.

Excellent BBQ area with free BBQ, sinks, BBQ tables with board games painted on them. All under a well covered area overlooking the beach.

Composting facilities available for left over food, excellent system they have arranged here. You can do this yourself, or you have the option of taking a small bucket with lid and bringing to them daily or when suits for them to sort food for you.

Staff very friendly and helpful. Tho we did find the office was closed most of the day, when we went for advice, maps etc.

Road in is a long winding narrow gravel road which can be a bit "hairy" in places if you meet another vehicle. Thankfully we had no problems with our motorhome and trailer. But could be interesting in the busier times.

Fantastic views on the road in, well worth a stop in the few places you can park and look over the sea.

Bookings can be made for sites, we did use this system tho. We arrived with cash but eft pos is available also.

Well worth the drive, to such a peaceful area, we will defintely be back

Absolutely gorgeous surroundings and a lovely place to stay.

Sites right on the beach front and some set back too for choice, with clean long drop toilets and cold showers in cubicles (has hooks to put your solar shower in too if you want). The staff are very friendly with loads of advice for walks etc. Gorgeous scenery and safe beach for swimming, definitely worth the winding gravel road to get there!

I would like to thank Rankers Camping App in 1st place to help in finding camping sites with ease.

This place is an amazing DOC managed campsite. Worth the travel for a mind blowing ocean view and real touch to be with nature. The manager was so kind and friendly to welcome us, advise in setting up things. Ample and private beach bay to enjoy in shore. Well maintained toilets though it’s compost and basic facilities. Down sides are the unsealed gravel road stretch which is time consuming with the usual wear and tear for the vehicle and no shops near by, pack all your needs sufficiently. That’s the cons I would say rather. At the end it’s a great site to spend for a weekend.

Arrived in winter and it was very quiet (3 people on the campsite).

Camp manager was extremely friendly and gave great advice. Drop toilets and electrical sites. Cold outdoor showers, although there was a sign for warm showers at a lowly cost of $2.

    Wow. We loved it here.

This was our first night in nz in our camper van. It was a really special place to stay. The campground is quiet and very well maintained right on the beach. it is situated along the length of the beach in a beautiful wide sandy bay backed by low lying sand dunes. There is a pleasant walk along the cliffs to the north of the campsite which we enjoyed and our 5 year old just loved splashing about in the waves and running around on the beach. I couldn't get over the night sky either. I've never seen so many stars. The big but is that the drive along the grit track really does take 1.5hrs. At the time, my husband was ready to kill me for my choice of campsite, but once we'd got there and he'd had a sleep, he loved it. It was indisputably our favourite place to stay of our whole trip.

Best choice ever to drive all the way up there.

Stayed for 2 nights, in a tent right by the shore. Very large area with very few people. Some kiwis that come here every year for several weeks. Top facilities. Shelter, sinks with water, bbq area, showers. Very cool warden that gives you advice about hikes and weather forecasts. The beach at low tide is a perfect place to play frisbee et cetera.

Beautiful location, really friendly and helpful camp manager and perfect spot, right on a secluded beach with plenty of walks near by.

Its a LONG drive down very windy, gravel road but worth it at the end. Allow yourself plenty of time to get there. Also, we weren't aware, but you can't continue the whole way around the peninsula from there. The road up the west side ends shortly after the campsite.

Plenty of compost toilets and showers - basic but fine. They also have two powered sites, but these aren't on the beach front.
