Fifteen years ago Sally Shanks channelled her desire to create something fabulous, glamorous and a little bit quirky into the old billiard room of former gentlemen's club, The Poverty Bay Club, transforming it into a modern-day cinema with a few twists.

Bean bags, original long leather couches and a couple of thrones offer seating options, pizza, ice cream and refreshments are delivered after the intermission gong sounds and screenings are often accompanied by some manner of theatrics, the kind that evade description but rather must be experienced to be believed. Every night is a different show.

The adjourning bar has since been taken under Sally’s wing so that today’s Dome Bar & Cinema offers a full bar, a seasonal menu from Wednesday to Saturday and a courtyard complete with roaring fire or cascading waterfall depending on the requirements of the season. The Dome is a favourite venue for musicians from around the country, so keep an eye on the Dome calendar for both the film schedule and gig guide.

The Dome Bar & Cinema offers its visitors the opportunity to escape the ‘everyday’, to experience a kind of glamour that doesn’t take itself too seriously.
